USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

This is the Great Pumpkin, and maybe you can break the record, over 1500 lbs. Probably, you just want great pies.

Zones 1 - 10

Plant Information

This is the world famous pumpkin that can be carefully coaxed and fertilized to over 1,000 lbs. Whether you do that or just grow a few in the garden at regular size, they're great for pumpkin carving at Halloween, and pies a few weeks later!

When and Where to Plant: Select sunny location and plant in the late spring when the soil has warmed. For an earlier crop, start indoors 4-6 weeks before setting out. For best results loosen soil with spade or fork, working in vegetable food and organic matter, and smooth with rake. Firm soil over seed and keep moist.
Care: For maximum size feed monthly, keep soil moist, pinch off all but 1 or 2 pumpkins per vine and leave plenty of space between plants.
Harvesting: Cut from vine using pruning shear, leaving 3” of stem.

    Q & A

    Plant With These:

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
