USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

"Romaine" is easy to grow, and you just can't beat the long leaves with the crunchy thick mid-rib. Be sure to make space for this one for all your summer salads.

When and Where to Plant: Lettuce is a cool-weather crop. Select a sunny location, cultivate and fertilize soil with vegetable food. Plant in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Sow seed sparingly, firming soil over row. Repeat at 2 week intervals as long as weather is cool–spring and fall. For earliest crop start seeds indoors.
Care: Water lightly and regularly. Protect from pests.
Harvesting: Head is ready when center feels firm.

Comments about American Meadows Romaine Lettuce Seeds:

I have never successfully grown Romaine so I was worried. I wasn't skeptical, however, because everything and I mean everything I have gotten from American Meadows has been wonderful. I love to garden so I shop at a wide variety of gardening shops in my local area and online. Of all of them, and I have some favorites, especially locally, American Meadows has never failed me. I have always been thrilled. It is no different with the Romaine lettuce seeds. They were easy to cultivate, resistant to disease and bugs, lovely in the garden and delicious. I love wilted, hot salads and summer salads with fresh fruit and homemade dressing. The Romaine was perfect for these dishes. I love it!

        Fabulously Easy to Grow

        from Hinderlands, Indiana

Comments about American Meadows Romaine Lettuce Seeds:

This was the first time in about 4 years that I attempted to grow Romaine. The very first time I tried, I failed. Maybe it was the weather or my lack of skill but I also think it was the product. I purchased a bag of seeds from a store that really didn't specialize in plants and the result was what I should have expected. This year, I planted early and the most beautiful heads of lettuce began to sprout. Upon harvest, they were tender, sweet and lovely. I was thrilled with them.

i am going to buy this product years

        Q & A

        Plant With These:

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
