USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Veronica Purpleicious’ deep-purple, fragrant spikes are offset by deep green foliage. Simply stunning both planted in containers or in the garden bed. The sweet fragrance will attract winged friends to the garden.

Everyone Loves Veronicas. In perennial borders, they have always added great vertical interest with elegant spires of color. They bloom for a long time, and are a snap to grow. In addition, many of the species are native American wildflowers, making the hybrids at home in all our gardens. (Many call them by their other common name, Speedwell.)

Comments about American Meadows Veronica Purpleicious:

I plant a lot of salvia and veronica in this z4a because they are hardy and beautiful, and it is wonderful to have a taller spiked-form rising above other, smaller forms, esp. against the golds like coreopsis Zagreb.

Not great for containers since they won't all bloom the first season

        great find

        By

        from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about American Meadows Veronica Purpleicious:

This is a great find. Grows easily with little care after planting. It has grown to full height and width this season...I think. It continues to produce flowers and the bees love it. The color is beautiful color. It arrived with buds and is still growing new flowers after several months. It is planted in a bed with lilies and hides the lily stems very well and tolerates the moisture the lilies need without difficulty.

          Q & A

          Plant With These:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
