One of the world’s most popular wildflowers, Red Poppy is also known as Flanders Poppy, immortalized in poetry for the carpet of red beauty it creates when in full bloom. A must-have for any wildflower meadow or garden, this easy-to-grow annual delights with bright blooms in the summer season. Red Poppies are deer resistant and also attract pollinators to the garden. This red beauty also makes for spectacular cut bouquets. All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Annual.

This is the well-loved poppy of Flanders Fields. Also known as Corn Poppy and Flanders Poppy, this species is the symbol of the American Legion. It creates an absolute vision of beauty in full bloom when the lipstick red poppies carpet a whole field, nodding in the breeze. The most famous poem of World War I begins, “In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow, among the crosses row on row.” A great growth of this species after WWI finally ended, attached the lovely red flower to that war and its veterans forever. Today, red poppy is probably the world’s most popular wildflower, and is available in the pure red strain as described here or in the more popular mixed color form. See P. rhoeas, Red Poppy (red, pinks, doubles).

Our wildflower garden is magical. The abundance of flowers that just show up all summer are incredible. The poppies are my personal favorite.I had never seen anything like it before. We recommend American Meadows to everyone because after you prepare the soil and get them planted, they basically take care of themselves and paint a rainbow in your yard for Spring and Summer. Most of the wildflowers are great as cut flowers, but the poppy is not. That is the poppy's ONLY flaw.

This was a very disappointing purchase. The seeds did not germinate as stated and the plants did not come up as expected. These were planted in rich soil with supplements and proper watering. We planted the entire pound of seeds ordered and what came up was pure disappointment and colors different than what I purchased. I dont expect anyone at your company to read this or even care but you asked for feedback and I am giving it to you now accurately and as it happened.

Nothing germinated

Comments about American Meadows Red Poppy Seeds:

I purchased 1/4 of seeds to plant on property. Area was well cleared, planted according to instructions. Not one plant germinated out of the bag of seeds. Very disappointed. I was so excited thinking that I would have color in field this summer.

Comments about American Meadows Red Poppy Seeds:

Year two of our wildflower meadow, and the poppies are ENORMOUS and gorgeous. They tie with the bachelor buttons as first up in late spring, and they last and last and last. It's the start of July, and I still have dozens and dozens of as-yet-unopened poppies.

First year plants are small and fragile looking, but still vibrant and lovely. By the second year, plants are sturdier and groan under the amount of buds.

We're now seeing mutations pop up from the second year seed- and delight in finding the odd pink, or white-and-pink streaked poppy, but the majority are lipstick red and classic.

Comments about American Meadows Red Poppy Seeds:

I have an area behind our back fence that is pretty much drab and unused. On a whim I purchased 1/4 lb and scattered the seeds, fall before last. I couldn't have been more surprised. Bright vivid red color sprouted everywhere and lasted well into the warmer weather. Even the neighbor came over and spoke on how great they looked. This year I noticed they have self seeded and are coming up again. Well worth it. Low maintenance, No watering or care what-so-ever.

Comments about American Meadows Red Poppy Seeds:

We planted these poppies, along with batchelor buttons, around the perimeter of our vegetable garden fence. After planting, we had some heavy rains and many of the seeds washed into the garden. We had poppies all over the garden; even growing through the burlap bags that we used for walkways, and up the tomato cages. These poppies are about 2 feet tall and just gorgeous. (Where we didn't want them, we just cultivated.) I don't think I could ever plan such a beautiful vegetable garden on purpose! Germination rate was exceptional. What a pretty combination of flowers! I wish I had a photo to share. I'm placing my order for the same conbination of flower seeds now. Lesson learned: This year, I'll try to contain the seeds so they don't wash into the garden as much...or maybe not!

We put in a large area of the back yard mixed with other seeds like we did when we did this in Chicago... but ..... perhaps not enough sun as it only gets half sun and half shade depending on time of day.

I scattered the seeds in different small sections in the garden to compliment the plants already there or as fillers. They are not only drop dead gorgeous, they are also tough, standing up to strong wind better than all the hybrid poppies I have. They are also mildew resistant/free. A neighbor asked me for permission to take photos of them because she was 'in love with them'. I gave her some extra seeds and the website information, and that really made her day. I bought more seeds than recommended as I was not sure about how well they germinate. That wasn't a problem at all. I am going to share the extra seeds with the neighbors. These flowers are so bright, huge, they definitely turn heads.

I also planted Southeast blend and only a few have made an appearance. Funny,a little over a year ago I planted Indian blanket and Southeast blend and had no problems. Oh how I really wanted the poppies to come out. My daughter and I fell in love with them in Romania.

Comments about American Meadows Red Poppy Seeds:

I cleared an area of our land in Princeton, NJ to plant a broad mix of wildflower seeds from American Meadows: Cosmos Dwarf Mix plus nearly all the varieties carried by American Meadows that were said to grow well in half-sun. Of all these, only Cosmos Dwarf Mix and Sulphur cosmos dwarf lemon thrived. The area previously had heavy tree cover though now is half-sun, clay ground, fairly wet. The few poppies that bloomed were so beautiful, I'll try those again next year as well.

I seeded these on some very dry, hardpan hoping to get something to grow without having to bring in a lot of topsoil to this area. Unfortunately the seeds never germinated; this is more likely due to where I put the seeds rather than the product themselves.

I do love the red poppies and will probably try to grow these again next Spring in better soil.

The 3-star rating was chosen as a neutral, no-opinion rating, rather than not being satisfied ith the product.

i think the best way to grow these is to sow them on disturbed ground in the fall. but i have also had success by sowing in spring. the fall sown poppies were blooming profusely just in time for mothers day. my mom said it looks like a monet painting.

I just broadcast these in the fall and they came up all over the place. They survived the winter (lowest temps were in the 20s) and are just starting to flower now.

They reminded me of the poppy fields of "The Wizard of Oz." Thanks!

NONE of my seeds sprouted; this was likely my fault. I hand-broadcast them in the early spring in a wild meadow. Heavy rains ensued after that in southern Missouri. The ground was unprepared, but I wanted to see how they would do on their own, as nature intended. The heavy rains may have washed them all away. I will just have to try again.

Shirley mix poppies that I planted 3 years ago are still coming up @ the edges of the garage. Last years seeds were orange not red; my neighbor mowed them down but they bloomed anyway all summer long. Poppies are hard to get started; must be kept moist but they bloom all summer and are so delicate and lovely. All the neighbors loved them.

The flowers were truely beautiful, but there were few of them, they didnt last very long, and they were too low growing to be seen among the other flowers in the meadow that were supposed to be similar in height.

                                                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
