Germinated in a matter of only a few days! I have never seen any seed or seed mix start to grow so fast. Our weather has been mid 50'2 day and low 40's at night (Pacific North West) and I planted this in 5/8- gravel by the road side, and it is growing so fast. Planted on April 26 photo taken May 6th 2011. I planted this in front of my fence by on the shoulder of the road in the gravel. I figure that crab grass will grow in the gravel so why not plant this and make a ground cover before the crab grass has a chance to grow. It worked so far.

I purchased 5 lbs. ([$]) of this seed to use on a large, sloping hill (approx 10,000 sq.ft) that was excavated prior to our home build. The soil was completely cleared of brush although it contained small rocks. I followed the directions to the letter through direct email communication with Paula at American Meadows yet saw an area of growth no larger than 10' by 15'. Our climate is perfect for wildflower growth so it was even more disappointing that very little grew. It was an expensive purchase and I'm extremely disappointed with the results.

Used on a new slope we preferred not to mow. Very little green showing now :( Also seeded spots with crown vetch and dry area seed which are sprouting well. Not sure why these aren't sprouting up like the others but we're going to have to give in and just go with grass I guess.

This is starting to work and take over the lawn by reseeding and spreading. I like the flowers and colors and watching more butterflies on the lawn. With drought conditions, this is a good idea and with age nice to not worry as much about fertilizing etc. Added plus, it was not difficult to plant at all.

tried these seeds in different locations (on lawn, on dry patch of soil both sandy & moist), in a planter, but with an exception to a few sprouts, did not see anything growing. will be trying something else.

I spread the seeds over a newly tilled lawn. Most of the sprouted earlier or later giving a romantic lacy appearance to my backyard. My only dislike it that I had mostly alyssum and daisies - only white flowers. Yellow daisy was fairly random and I have 2-3 violas only, no blue flowers at all. I will try again next spring and may add my own seeds too beef up the color.

I really wanted this to work. I purchased both this mix + clover to fill in my lawn in areas that were 'troubled'. We rototilled and added some extras to the areas we wanted to plant (peat and manure) and were really happy to see sprouts coming up quickly -- but they never really got established or got any bigger than sprouts and kind of fizzled out despite careful watering and keeping pets and people out of the area. We will try again next year tho' and hopefully have better luck.

Comments about Alternative Lawn Wildflower Seed Mix:

I have used this seed mix in an attempt to establish an alternative lawn, first with a quick sowing mid-summer to get it started (because that's when the landscaping was ready), and then oversowing thoroughly the following spring. Because it was hot for the first sowing, it took a good week or two to germinate, and that meant it washed out of high areas and clumped more than I would have liked. (This isn't a flaw with the product, though--just unfortunate timing.) When it did germinate, though, it did so vigorously (except in part shade), particularly for the annuals: the sweet alyssum was beautiful (and almost overwhelming)! A year later, some of the perennials seem to have taken better than others--I haven't had any blooms for certain species in the mix yet, but I'm hoping they will appear soon. The mix is very pretty, with a lot of delicate-looking flowers. It grows to be about 8-12" tall (very important information for a lawn alternative that wasn't clearly included in the description). It's not so dense that taller weeds won't invade--once in place, I have had to weed every few weeks, but the weeds are overall relatively few and pretty manageable.

An unfortunate property of this mix, though, is that it contains strawberry clover. There's nothing wrong with the plant itself: the clover is pretty and does not spread aggressively. But as a perennial, it also doesn't bloom in the first year, and you're discouraged from weeding once the mix is sown so that you don't disrupt the growth of the meadow. The consequence was that I had no idea the meadow had been aggressively invaded by white clover until the second year, when they all bloomed (I had thought the strawberry clover was just doing very well and was present in large numbers in the mix! It is actually relatively sparse), by which point it was far too late to get it back under control without ripping out all the other perennials. The white clover is so aggressive that it has smothered a lot of the other plants in this mix, and has taken over whole sections of the meadow--including growing right over the stone path and into my vegetable beds. It's much, much more difficult to manage than the plants in the mix, but unfortunately, varieties of clover are difficult to tell apart when they are small and until they bloom a year later. So I now have a more labor-intensive white clover meadow, with occasional areas that have other pretty wildflowers. (But: the clover is still mostly a pretty meadow addition, and the pollinators are happy. I could, however, have easily transplanted white clover to fill the yard for free!)

If there was a clover-free version of this mix, I might pull out everything in the yard and start over fresh with it next spring. Instead I will be trimming back the white clover as well as I can, and then maybe oversowing again with this mix if the weather breaks and is a little cooler--hopefully it will compete with the clover and I'll get some of these perennials to succeed for next year. It's frustrating that I'll have to buy more seed to accomplish this, though.

Comments about Alternative Lawn Wildflower Seed Mix:

We planted this as along with an equal amount of bluegrass seed. It was breathtaking in earliest spring (San Jose/ South SF bay area, zone 9)

By early May, it was 80 % stiff, tall daisies and played out alyssum. White and brown. the chamomile, english lawn daisies and violas were drowned out by taller daisies. Not great for our kids to play and sit in the flowery meadow we were hoping for.

In Seattle, however, this mix was excellent at making the flowery lawn.

I am pulling out most of the center this year and planting with the lower, softer plants we had purchased this mix for. It is certainly hardy, so I will have to have to really dig and then put in plants instead of seeds, to the detriment of my wallet and the disappointment of my daisy chain weaving kids.

so, I would say, right plants, wrong place.

I planted this mix in the fall according to the instructions, but there are no signs of flowers or fescue this spring. I'm still hopeful something will appear as we move into the summer months.

Used this for a grassy area constantly plagued by moss and moles. Hasn't been in long but germinated quickly. Also used as a ground cover for native plant area and for parking strip. Very pleased with both -- flowers came in quickly and look good in what had been problem areas. Does best in direct sun, of course, but OK in partial shade. Shady areas, not so hot. Stands up to moderate traffic pretty well.

I like the idea of a lawn substitute and ordered this mix two years in a year, planting some in full sun and some in half-sun.
Only one patch (in full sun) came in half-way decent, although a bit thin. However, my area is officially in an EXTREME DROUGHT!!! - Some of the Johnny Jump-Ups did come up along my rose hedge, where they get 1/2 sun, and look quite nice, esp. the second year, so I plan to order more of that seed for that specific type of location.

I waited until spring to seed these. They germinated very quickly and evenly, and because we've had regular rain, they seem very healthy at this time. I planted these in a slightly sloped area, in full sun, where fescue grass has been struggling in the summertime. I'm hoping that this will beautify this area.

I live in the SF bay area (zone 9b or Sunset zone 17.) I let my lawn brown out over the summer, then covered it with a few layers of newspaper. Over that, just regular garden soil. I sowed these in November 2011 and despite our dry winter and my irregular watering, I now have a beautiful wildflower meadow. I ordered 1/4 pound for an area about 800 sf and the coverage is excellent. I have two dogs who run on this regularly and it looks great (though I kept them off it till seedlings were established.) Highly recommended.

This grew hardily in a large mixed sun/shade spot; it is soft on the feet, a lovely green, and late in summer it blooms so daintily, so charmingly, it nearly takes your breath away. A delight. Will order more.

I planted the alternative lawn mix in a hard to mow area. After planting, it rained for 7 straight days. I thought the seed would wash away. After it quit raining I was gonna order some more but I walked outside and got down on my knees and seen a bunch of seedlings sprouting. After 4 days there is a noticable difference in the amount of seedlings. Still waiting for them to grow high and strong but off to a good start. Make sure u mix 10 to 1 sand to seed ratio to get optimum results. I didn't and ran a little short on seed. Definately buy this product!
