Description
This fascinating little legume is named for the shape of its seedpod which looks like the claw foot of a bird. Introduced for agricultural uses, this wildflower is now a common roadside plant in much of the United States. If often invades lawns, and when mowed along with the grass, will bloom at heights as low as 2 inches! If left to grow on its own, it makes mounded clumps reaching up to about 2 feet, and creating an attractive groundcover. Unlike most agricultural legumes, it does not spread rapidly. However, like yarrow, Birdsfoot Trefoil is best used as a clump or specimen planting, rather than as part of a mixture. If it's used heavily in a mixture, it's so tough it tends to take over the whole meadow in a few years.

Comments about American Meadows Bird's Foot Trefoil Seeds:

I purchased a 1/4 lb of seed and cast them last fall. I do not see a single plant anywhere. I would have loved to show them off had they emerged. I have a friend who simply gathered a bunch of seed from the roadside and has blooms. I am so disappointed - I go out everyday and look for them along my now unused gravel driveway, and side of the rural road I live on - nada! I ONLY HOPE the chicory does not follow suit; I will wait patiently for it. I would LOVE to try again but...........hesitate to do so[...]

I have about 30 spices from you & I mixed them & planted them in SEP 2008, in 2009 I had a nice spate of flowers but this Spring I already have tons of plants showing.
These are being used to fill a hill next to the house. the place is just bare. I think this year I may see more like a mini meadow. I will be planting more this Autumn.

I bought this to mix with grass for an area under small trees with dappled light and shade. Very few plants came up. The ones I have are pretty, though.
