A favorite annual in meadows from Maine to California, Blue Cornflower adds true blue blooms to the summer garden or meadow. Also known as Bachelor Button, silver foliage offsets its blue blooms tremendously and attracts birds (especially American goldfinches) with its seed. Blue Cornflower is extremely easy to grow and is gorgeous planted on its own or paired with other colors of Cornflower. All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Annual.

World-famous “cornflower blue” is the bluest blue in the flower kingdom, and that makes this many people’s favorite flower. Easy to grow, quick to bloom, great for cutting. Strong seedlings have a “silvery” look in a seeded meadow. In fact, cornflower grows so well, it has become somewhat of a pest in some areas, most notably the Southeast. Birds love seed. American goldfinches (wild canaries), particularly, put on quite a show as they dive into fields of this flower when it is going to seed. This is the famous flower of many romantic legends, thus the name “Bachelor’s Button”. Young single girls wore the bloom as a signal of availability in Old England. It also always figures prominently in the Victorian "Language of Flowers"--of which there are several versions.

I sow these in our meadow, some areas with other wildflowers; but for large areas, they can also stand on their own. They bloom from mid spring through summer and are lovely. The blue is a true, deep cornflower blue. They are quite hardy and need no special care--they will bloom about anywhere you scatter the seed. Maintenance free!! They do well in all kinds of soil--we planted them in moist areas and also in dry areas. Check out the photos that follow. Also, if you are a person who loves to watch birds, plant these, your meadow will be filled with finches, wrens, bluebirds, and many others coming to feast on the plentiful seeds they produce. One other thing, they make beautiful dried bouquets that will last forever indoors. The color stays true even when dried. So many good things from such a simple, pretty flower.

Though these are supposedly some of the hardiest wildflowers around, I did have some trouble growing these from seed - and despite spreading thousands upon thousands of seeds in small areas. Where they did come up, they were lovely, though swamped with green - the flowers were too tiny to stand out and rather quickly died, leaving a dense green jungle of weeds.

I do have to say, thought, that American Meadows's customer service is unmatched in excellence!!!

Comments about American Meadows Blue Cornflower or Bachelor Button Seeds:

I planted these a couple of years ago and was amazed at how tall the plants were and how big the blossoms! Wow, a burst of the most amazing blue covering that area of my garden. Long stems, perfect for cutting. I love these seeds. I was curious to see if the plants would reseed, so didn't buy them again the next year, and regretted that decision. I had a few come up, but nothing like the first time. So, with that new knowledge, I buy them fresh and wait for the show. These are spectacular in the Phoenix, Arizona area during the spring time. Highly recommend.

Your seeds are used exclusively at our Children's Petting Zoo. Flowers are used to add to the effect for the children and they love walking through the paths and gardens. We have many groups of ill and injured children and they really love the bright colors that your seeds produce. The blue of these flowers is a great stand alone effect with our white swans.

Very, very unfortunately, all the seeds ordered from you suffered terrible draught. Not much has happened with them. However, give you 5+ stars on the lovely packaging and what looked like very quality seeds. Just real sad we lost most of the crop. Will order from you again some time.

I mass planted this in a pollinator meadow to provide some first year bloom while my slower to establish native perennials get going. It had good germination and was good at out-competing weedy turf grasses and buckhorn plantain. It doesn't appear weedy itself and is slowly declining in the meadow as I had hoped.

We had a large area that we wanted to sow to native plants. Our daughter was getting married in late summer and had chosen Cornflower Blue as her bridesmaids' dresses. We hosted a wedding reception on our farm, and the beautiful cornflowers were a fun accent to our other yard flowers. Following the reception, I mowed the patch, and they have regrown and are producing beautiful flowers! The only slight "con" I have, is that the stems get very leggy and are alittle hard to use in cut flower arrangements. However, this con is certainly not a big enough problem to deter me from recommending and using this seed and the company for future seed and plant selections.

I love the bachelor buttons. They bloom early and last for the entire season. I have other colors including purple, pink, and white.

                                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
