Plant Information

This species can be a major colormaker in a meadow’s first year bloom. It throws gorgeous, rose/purple clusters of small flowers in only about six to eight weeks after germination. None-So-Pretty is a favorite with children, and one of the species that thrills first-time meadow gardeners with its prolific, foolproof bloom. (The common name, catchfly, refers to the plant’s sticky sap. The flowers do not attract or catch flies.)

Comments about American Meadows None so Pretty or Catchfly Seeds:

I have the best luck with these in bare or non-competition areas. They are bright pink and take drought well. They also re-seed. I have planted in zone 3 and 4. Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Comments about American Meadows None so Pretty or Catchfly Seeds:

I planted half the dry area seed mix last spring and the last half last fall. This spring and summer I have the most vivid color with these little beauties. I am also quite pleased with the Siberian Wall flowers, mini snapdragons and blanket flowers in this mix. I will be ordering these all individually. These are my favorite.

      Few of these bloomed

      By

      from Princeton, NJ

      About Me Avid Gardener

Comments about American Meadows None so Pretty or Catchfly Seeds:

Saw one or two blooms from these. I cleared an area of our land in Princeton, NJ to plant a broad mix of wildflower seeds from American Meadows: Cosmos Dwarf Mix plus nearly all the varieties carried by American Meadows that were said to grow well in part-sun. Of all these, only Cosmos Dwarf Mix and Sulphur cosmos dwarf lemon thrived. The area previously had heavy tree cover though now is half-sun, clay ground, fairly wet. The few poppies that bloomed were so beautiful, I'll try those again next year as well.

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
