Our Master Gardeners Suggest Pairing With:
This is the blue-flowered species in the famous wild lobelia family. This one is a grand 3 to 5' plant that quickly forms attractive colonies in light woodland or other shady spots. (Allow the flowers to drop their seeds in fall, and you'll have a big group of plants in no time.) Unlike its cousin, the more showy red Cardinal Flower, which holds its flower stalks above the leaves, Great Blue Lobelia opens sky blue midsummer flowers in the axils of each upper leaf, and then continues blooming for weeks and weeks. It also sends out side shoots, resulting in striking blue bloom on a candelabra-like plant.

Comments about American Meadows Blue Cardinal Flower Seeds:

Blue cardinal flower is true to American Meadow's description. My first attempt with these seeds was lackluster, with little germination in peat pellets and a covered flat, though I did get some plants. A subsequent trial with a new packet of seeds in 2013 germinated fine to yield many seedlings. Seedlings were easily separated from peat pellets to 2.5-inch grower pots and I will soon transplant them into soil after they have spent some time developing roots in pots. I planted the few seedlings obtained from an earlier seed packet next to red cardinal flower plants after reading the American Meadows' description that says people often plant it with its "cousin". These are blooming now. I have found that I under-appreciate the blue cardinal flower's bloom because the stunning, bold, and eye-catching red cardinal flower bloom steals the show for me. Perhaps also contributing to "under-appreciation" is that in addition to plants started from seed, I have now discovered MANY blue cardinal flowers growing wild, in an unattended, undeveloped field past our property line, in part sun beyond a small creek at the base of our wooded slope. Prior to growing my own plants from seed, I presumed that these were weeds. (I should explain that I am just now beginning to learn about wildflowers, which includes learning to identify them.) I give the 2013 lot # of American Meadows' blue cardinal flower seeds a 5-star rating because germination performed as expected to yield many seedling plants. I feel sure I will have many blooming blue cardinals in 2014.
