You do need to follow the directions when scattering the seed, especially if doing a large amount. Don't think you know better than they do. I have a lovely bank of flowers that is thick on one end and more weedy on the other because it is difficult to sow the seeds evenly by hand over a large area. But even with that it is a lovely bank that always wins compliments and doesn't take any work except mowing once in the fall. This spring I will landscape a much larger hillside that was prepared last fall with the NE wildflower mix. This time I am including some annuals to bloom the first summer. I can mow it once in the fall which will prevent brush and trees from growing back, preserving my view with the added benefit of having a beautiful hillside of wildflowers all summer. They start blooming in early summer and continue til fall. By cutting back on lawn I am saving fuel, time and cutting pollution all summer.

I started a 2000 sq ft. wildflower meadow and needed a bit more seed- so I ordered another 1/4 lb to fill in the holes. I started by roto tilling a hill where grass wouldn't grow very well. I followed all of the directions on how to roto till and plant the meadow. I soon found that I needed to water it a lot, which was difficult being such a large area. Once I saw seedlings appear, I also noticed MANY crab grass seedlings and other grasses coming up- soon, there was more grass than flowers. The annuals bloomed but not that many, and the whole thing just looked like an unkept weedy mess. [...] I decided I did not want to add chemicals to that large a part of my yard so I ended up just mowing the whole area. It is now late summer and we'll see if any of it comes up next year. The whole experience was much more tedious than I had hoped. Maybe someone with more experience will have better luck!

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

We are reviving an area near a river that was used as a dump for years. After taking out about 30 yards of garbage we planted 1 pound of these seeds last fall just in time for the seedlings to germinate and take root. This spring there are still hundreds of seedlings that are starting to grow up. We look forward to seeing the results and will keep this updated.

I bought this as a gift for my grand son and grand daughter and they loved it. They planted their own flower patch on the slope behind their house and watched it grow and flower from spring through summer. From this they will learn to love gardening as I do.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I used my seed to grow a large wildflower meadow. I loved that it was 100% seed and no filler. It covered the right amount of area based on the websites recommendation. Was a little disappointed that the lupine didn't flower this year and that there were long periods between certain blooms. I was expecting much more overall color. Overall it was a great product and I was happy with what I got. Possibly weather conditions played a big factor in how things turned out. All I can say is that my cosmos are blooming like crazy still and this was the best burst of color I had gotten! would loved to have seen some zinnias in the mix!

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

The wildflower mix couldn't be easier to plant! We put down the seed on the far end of our lawn, which borders on a farmer's field. There is a water drain pipe there that we wanted to cover and also control water flow. We just left it to nature (hose wouldn't stretch that far!) and were thrilled with the abundance of 8' flowers that are still blooming in October. We will be getting more for our slope along the road that we don't like to mow.

I have used these flowers in full sun at the school where I teach. As long as I can keep the landscapers from cutting them down, a wide variety of wildflowers will bloom from Spring until Fall. I have also used this wildflower mix at my house in a location that has sun the majority of the day but does get shady late in the afternoon. I did not see the same variety that I see at school. Only 3 different varieties grew.

This was my first try with wildflowers and I didn't get any of the annuals to bloom. We had a late frost this year and I think that may have killed all of the flowers! American Meadows has great customer service and replaced my seeds at no extra cost! I am going to amend the soil better and plant the seeds this fall instead of the spring.

In the fall, I waited until after a couple of frosts, prepared the soil, and planted these seeds. It turned out to be a strange fall and became unusually warm in late November, December so the seeds germinated. I thought that was the end of it because of course they disappeared when winter came. I was surprised when spring came to see a lot going on and got some nice flowers (that was last spring). This spring I just threw down some more seeds and wow -- I'm amazed every time I go out and see the beautiful wildflower patch. It's thick with so many different flowers. It's still early and I can't wait to see what will be blooming next week. And this fall I'll be expanding. It's much more than I expected. The only think that would make it better is a page here showing pictures of these particular plants.

Adds a splash of color to the meadow grasses. I'm not sure all the seed varieties thrive, but the daisies and phlox and black-eyed susans and poppies seem to be able to compete with the natural growth.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

This is our fourth year of planting your very wonderful Northeast Wildflower Mix ! ! We have been re-planting every year because the eventual grass-invasion leaves us with a sorry mess at the end of the season. (Re-planting involves spade-turning the entire plot). This year we might try "Jessica's" procedure of using black plastic to kill the grass before seeding. However, spade-turning before spreading the plastic is probably still essential in order to ensure a good planting environment. We usually lay a small plywood panel over the scattered seed and dance a few steps to "set" the seed.

There is a herbicide product specific for unwanted grasses. Safe for over 400 typical ornamentals (they say). It looks promising but, how can we know its long-term effect ? We are tempted to try it, nevertheless. Perhaps the company may have an input here.

I wanted these for an area close to my house that is difficult to mow and also has runoff from the roof when it rains. I had growth very soon after planting and then throughout the summer. The variety has provided me with flowers for cutting, food for birds and butterflies and accomplished my goal of filling an area that was previously bare. I am very pleased.

I have had fresh flowers all summer for the house and the front and back yard look great with blooming wildflowers. The early white delicate blooms were lovely, and now the sunflowers, cosmos, and delicate blooms are gorgeous.

I can't really comment on any of the above as I had no growth at all, with all the seeds I planted. I watered carefully as often as I could what with the drought conditions. Am not sure I want to spend any more money trying to develop a wild flower garden.

My late husband always had a big vegetable garden, but after he died, I just didn't have the heart to plant more vegetables. So I decided, after seeing your company online, to plant a wildflower garden. When the flowers started blooming, I felt it was a perfect tribute to my husband. The variety and prolific amount of flowers is so pleasing to the eye. I've had many many compliments on my tribute garden, and can only hope that most of the flowers will come back in the Spring. The garden is still in bloom and it seems new flowers open up every day. I love it.

Nice mixture of plants. In addition, got a surprise. At least one of the seeds was for butternut squash. I now have four growing and blossoms for a number of other potential ones.

Bought the seeds to cover an area approx. 30ft x 30ft. We put the seed in a little later than we wanted to. The ground was hard so I used a rotary cultivator to work soil a few inches. Didn't get much rain so we watered a few times. A few flowers came up but not many. Next year I may need to mix in something with the soil to loosen it up. We will try again next year and hopefully we will get more to grow.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I used this NE w-flower mix in the front of my Central Coastal NJ house (mixed in w/ 4-6" of food scrap compost) and it is awesome! I am satisfied w/ the color, height, and length of season (although we had no winter here, so an early growing season start) but am confident I'll have color through November (all with a slight to moderate drought from April through this review - 8/7/2012)...Directions were great and easy to follow. It arrived in proper order and the bees and b-flies have arrived. I am excited to order again from here and am sure I won't be disappointed. I did suffer some bugs on 1 specific plant(not sure of name) but I've seen similar damage 5 miles away, so I know it's the bugs and not me.
I will be purchasing again from American Meadows.
