Description

Two of the major wild perennial lupine species of North America are now hopelessly crossed and confused by almost every seed grower. L. perennis, the basic blue wild species has been mixed with the taller L. polyphyllus (originally from the Pacific northwest and also blue) which was used years ago to make the famous “Russell Hybrid Lupines” in reds, yellows, and bicolors. So today, what you plant should be mostly blue, but may show some breaks to the other colors, adding a rainbow to your meadow. The blue-flowered plants are always the most permanent.

Used the lupines where the power company cut trees for new power line. Tilled area & sowed seeds. From there it was watch them grow and multiply year after year. Bought another lb. this year to make it thicker. Love the sight of them & trying to enhance the habitat for the Karner Blue butterfly.

Seeds seem to be slow starting, I am hoping that the plants will be bigger next year, and bloom! Had to transplant from seed trays, direct sow in best.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

Located in Northeast Massachusetts. Had a few lupines from years ago from a wild flower mixture from [@], of all places, and the few lupines that took hold would seed a few new plants each year. Last year apparently a lot of seeds took hold and I suddenly had a ton of them; I decided the whole septic field would look good in lupines. Bought 1lb. Planted mid-late spring with the ground damp and cold from recent snow melt. Not a single one of them grew. Not one. Out of 26,000. I am a novice. Pre-novice would be more descriptive.

While Lupine are sometimes hard to get started, the native variety of blue lupine such as these do well if the soil is not too rich and they get water and sun. We have them now established in masses along our stream, and they self seed and spread further each season. Great for naturalized meadow gardens and in beds for June flowers.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

I planted these seeds directly in my garden in several different areas in the spring of '09. It is now almost summer '11 and ONE flower has bloomed out of the pound of seeds I bought. The foliage is doing great, and I thinned them out as directed. I am really hoping I get better blooms next year.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

I live in Zone 7 (Texas) where it is very dry. I just installed a drip irrigation system, so that may also be responsible for the success I have had with the perennial Lupine seeds. I soaked the seeds in a glass of water for 24-48 hours and then just scattered them on the ground in my flowerbed in April. Then I walked over the seeds to press them into the ground. With the drip irrigation system watering each night (I have an entirely new flowerbed), the lupine seeds began sprouting almost immediately. One month later and the plants are about 4 inches high. The germination rate was great. I think every single seed (or almost every one) sprouted, even the ones stuck to my shoe and transferred to other parts of the garden. I can't wait to see them bloom next year.

I've been dying to plant these on my hillside but every time I try it with small plants they die. If these are anything like California Poppies you can't transplant them with any success and have to grow from seed. Generous quantity of seed in the 1/4lb packet should cover more than I need, thank you!

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

The wild lupine seed had excellent germination without soaking. I planted this in a wild flower garden with coreopsis, shasta daisy and rudbeckia. I even threw some additional seeds mid-winter (zone 5b) and they are growing fine. I highly recommend this product for the garden.

                                      Service and delivery comments:

Excellent customer service, absolutely tops. Most plants were well packed and in fine condition. The few plants which arrived in un-viable condition were replaced or refunded with no hassle.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

Lupine seeds require only tossing out over tilled soil. They have great foliage and wonderful flowers. The American Meadows seeds are a staple for my garden- great germination, yielding masses of colorful lupines year after year.

A must for all meadows, a field of lupines creates an amazing spectacle in late spring and summer. We like to combine them with later-blooming flowers for an extended season of color. Perennial.
