Comments about American Meadows Canada Anemone Seeds:

Having read that this plant spreads and could become invasive, I decided that it was just what I needed at the edge of my sloping woods where it could trail off down the slope and through the woods. I was eager to start some seeds in peat pellets for transplanting. The results were extremely poor. I got three plants out of a packet of seeds. American Meadows stood by its product guarantee and replaced the packet, later providing instructions for cold stratification. I cold stratified the replacement seeds according to instructions, but to no avail. I have 4 small plants in total. 3 are old enough that I am seeing C. anemone blooms for the first time during Spring 2013. It is quite lovely and reminds me of strawberry plant blooms. I am also seeing some "runners" on one plant. I presume that it is getting ready to spread, and I welcome it to "take charge" for I have planted these in an area where they can enjoy free reign of the heavily mulched shaded slope to help avoid erosion during spring rains. Perhaps just a few success seeds will end up okay after all. Time will tell.

I cannot honestly recommend this seed for people who expect good germination and superior results without a lot of work. Even the cold-stratification instructions did not work for me.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
