My husband and I built a new home with an acre of field in front that seemed too much a chore to turn into lawn so we decided to plant a meadow. The directions were accurate and we used a combination of dry area seed mix and the northeast mix. We did our best to clear the field and didn't get the seeds in until mid-June. We had a very dry and hot summer in 2008 but the results were spectacular! Many folks stopped to inquire and take pictures. The field bloomed well into October! It was a perfect solution and low maintenance too!

The flowers that bloomed quickly were pretty but very sparse. Since most are 'weed' types it is hard to discern what are weeds that need to be pulled and which are part of the growing process. There are times that it does look like a huge patch of different types of weeds with a few flowers here and there. After a while we tore it down and replanted different flowers. The following year seeds from this original plant apparently finally made their way through and were beautiful. The flowers that did bloom were beautiful and the butterflies/bees loved them. There just weren't enough flowers blooming at once.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix - 1/4 LB:

I have used a number of prairie mixtures from American Meadows and have been completely satisfied with all of them... except this one. I planted it under maple trees and watered often. It started out okay, but not as well as I expected. At this time, there are only about a dozen small flowers and the rest is completely bare. I'll try again next Spring, but I'm not hopeful.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix - 1/4 LB:

I used these seeds in a garden area next to my house. I wanted to plant something that would not require a lot of maintenance, but would provide colorful flowers. This mix was a great selection for that purpose. The mix provided a wide variety in both colors and sizes of flowers. They still look good today, I have been surprised by the long-lasting blooms!

We are only three feet above sea level and the ground is usually moist in most areas, but I have one raised bed that seems to always be dry no matter what I do. These seeds have done very well in that bed and have added color to a problem area of my yard. The colors make me smile.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix - 1/4 LB:

I live in an area with poor, rocky soil, little rainfall, and hot winds. It is difficult to find plants that can withstand those conditions. I wanted my backyard to look like a meadow of flowers with a slate-stone walking path. I used your dry area wild flower mix. The directions were very easy. The seeds I sprinkled are coming up through and around the stone in the most beautiful way. The plants seem really hearty and require little watering or attention. I especially like the yarrows and california poppys. It does take them a while to bloom. Thanks, I will be ordering again.

I've watched the seed fall into the earth an I know that next year will be even more spectaculor! Thank U so much!

I live in the city and planted this mix in the small areas around the trees that grow in the sidewalk in front of my house. They get watered by the winter rains and then go all summer without any help from me. For such a small space, there were a surprising number of plants that sprouted. The first year, the cosmos crammed out most everything else but the next year we had more variety. The neighbors love it and the plants managed to survive well in a challenging environment. I liked it so much, I passed some out to my neighbors.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix - 1/4 LB:

I seeded with the mix after the first hard frost in central New Hamphire last year, a large area that had not been planted with anything prior, but had a decent smattering of volunteer miscellaneous. The soil quality here was poor, which I'm sure is part of the reason not much of anything was growing here. To this area I brought in about 4 " of decent screened loam and covered the entire area (approx. 75 yards over about a 3000 square foot area., then seeded with the dry area mix. I hayed the steeper slopes hoping to mitigate any erosion threat, and did not hay any of the quietly sloped seeded areas, per the directions. When spring rolled around, germination was very spotty, though ironically the steeper slopes that had been hay mulched had the highest germination. Could have been due to an open winter (not to mention this location is in a rather harsh locale that gets tons of wind in the winter...) but when I called the folks at AM with my dubious report they sent me replacement seed, and I re-seeded all of the open areas in May, and paid a bit more attention to the area with regular watering until things germinated and got to maybe 6" tall.
Things came along pretty nicely. There was a pretty decent mix of blooms, mostly annuals this first year (cornflower being the highest concentration) through the summer, even with a shortage of rain and an abundance of heat. I'm hoping there will be enough self-seeding from the annuals and a goodly variety of perennials next year. All in all, I'd have to say this mix is a success, due in part to the willingness on behalf of the folks at AM to see me succeed. Thanks, Meadow folks!

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix - 1/4 LB:

I used the seeds to cover a larger bare spot on hard packed steep slope. I really did not expect the seeds to work but gave them a try. They turned out to produce the most beautiful flower patch and grew much better than potted flowers. I planted Cosmos which the seed mix contained. The potted ones are about 12 inches tall and the ones from seed are now 6 feet tall...I am amazed and will plant seeds again and cover other areas in need.

Using instead of turf grass on a steep hill with compacted clay soil. Several varieties of perennials are gradually taking over. Much better than wildflower mix from [@]

I have a summer wildflower patch on my front lawn which neighbors rave about. Last year I used cosmos and they grew to striking colorful heights from late May through October. They made great bouquets and looked wonderful ringed around garden statutes. This year I'm trying the new dwarf cosmos.

I plant these seeds around the base of our maple and poplar trees. Nothing else can grow there because the trees are water hogs. These flowers love it. The seed started sprouting within a week. I was so amazed and love the variety.

I live in a hot, dry area with heavy clay soil. I had a large flowerbed in the backyard that ran the length of the fence that I was having difficulty filling with anything that didn't require constant coddling.

I sowed these & the TX/OK mix in a big bare patch this autumn, and now I have loads of bright flowers on healthy plants. The germination rate was excellent, the plants don't require much supplemental irrigation, and they've out-competed the weeds that usually pop up every spring.

We chose this mix to reclaim an area where we had removed a variety of weedy and invasive Laurel, Holly, and Hypericum. The soil was depleted and dry and needed conditioning as well as some beauty...
It was easy to apply: we received a bag of mixed seeds and broadcast them over the area in Fall. we saved some and replenished in the spring. very simple. blooms have filled the area (where the invasive are not coming back) and the soil is changing to become more usable for other things. We are very happy with the progress, the only down side is the variety of blooms is less than we expected (lots of poppies, nigella, and cosmos) but that may be largely due to the depletion of the soil and what is hardy enough to handle it. We also find that some blooms have appeared the next year (some rudbekia and daisies) so we are hopeful that more are coming!
