Description
Foxglove, another of our wildflowers that was taken into gardens just as it was found in the wild centuries ago, is famous for its beauty, but also because it is poisonous. Should not be planted with children around. (You'll be fine. Just don't chew on it!) This quality of the plant also led to its use in medicine which is very important. The “digitalis” well-known in treatment of heart conditions is derived from this species.

Even though it's from faraway England, the wild foxglove is beautifully established and very popular in our woodsy Pacific Northwest, in places like the Oswald State Park in Oregon. The photo above was taken there by nature photographer, Don Paulson.

Comments about American Meadows Foxglove Seeds (Digitalis purpurea) - 1/4 LB:

I scattered a pound of these in 2010 and never saw any germinate. However, this year (2011) I did notice three that bloomed behind the shed inside a rolled up bit of fence (see picture). They were stunning. It's a shame that more didn't survive. I have a feeling that the young plants found the protection they needed inside the fence. I have had luck starting foxglove indoors, but once transplanted outside, they died. They may do better in pots where they can be protected from the elements or in areas that don't have heavy wind.

Comments about American Meadows Foxglove Seeds (Digitalis purpurea) - 1/4 LB:

I didn't pay much attention to these seeds after I scattered them in good, moist soil under partial to full shade. Still, one would think that at least a few of the 4,753,000 seeds comprising the pound of seeds I scattered would have germinated within two years, and none of them have so far as I can tell. American Meadows should be clear about the germination problems of this flower on its website. To be fair, I now understand that many full-shade plants may require several years to germinate from seed. This may be just as well in my case: After sowing these I read that they're quite poisonous to pets, and don't have a smell or taste mechanism to repel them so that they might be quite dangerous to dogs or cats.
