I gave 3 stars because I have no problem with the seeds themselves. In the few spots where weeds haven't choked them out, the wildflowers are nice. A jungle of weeds with occasional touches of color.
We decided to turn an overgrown weedy area into a little wildflower meadow, and after the last frost this spring we hacked and pulled and and tilled and raked and raked ... it took days to clear the area ... until we'd prepared the site as thoroughly as we could without chemicals. We followed the seed-sowing directions, watered carefully until the wildflower seedlings were established. The little guys were looking good until the Summer heat and rain really kicked in. That's when the weeds germinated, shot up and took over. By the end of June we were back to a weed jungle with a few spots where, mysteriously, the wildflowers prevailed.

What we really need to do this Fall is kill (chemically) the whole show and start over. The website tells you that good preparation is essential. What you need to understand is that good preparation may be a lot more extensive than you think.

Comments about American Meadows Golf Course Quick Color Wildflower Seed Mix:

We live in the country and have 8acres of...lets just call it meadow. We have green stuff in the yard close to the house, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "grass". But the other things that frow in the yard are native wild flowers, daisies, black eyed Susans, queen Ann's lace and a variety of others. So, when the yard is mowed, clumps of these natives are left. I wanted to enhance these areas and add some color. This mixture contained all my favorites.

However, I was somewhat disappointed that they all turned out to be fairly short stemmed flowers. When I think of Cosmos, I don't think of a 3 inch stem with a 1 inch flower. Also, I found that if, for example, you buy 5 pounds of seeds, you need to plant that 5 pounds all together. My mistake, but my garden looks pretty sparse because I went a bit JohnnyAppleSeed and spread my 5pounds around. I have patches of pretty flowers, but not nearly in the concentrations I wanted.

Having said all that...next year I buy 10 pounds! Even small flowers make beautiful bouquets.

I have ordered from American Meadows for two years. My wildflowers have been beautiful. They have bloomed heavily until frost. The instructions for planting were simple and easy to follow for a wonderful and beautiful display. The butterflies and hummingbirds have loved them. I highly recommend American Meadows!

I used the flowers to transition to a rough, weedy area that I do not maintain. They were great and choked out a lot of the smaller weeds. As the bigger weeds grew, I just plucked them out.

Planted this mix in an ignored, partially shaded corner. Followed directions and mixed the seeds with sand, spread the mix, and I walked over them. Seemed too easy and I didn't think they'd grow. Wow, was I surprised! Now everyone who sees them askes how I did it and where I got the seeds.

While it started quick and I got good germination, the flower assortment was limited. The description lists dozens of different flower seeds, but the pack I got had a "narrow and deep" assortment, meaning a few types of flowers represented, but lots of those types. Would have liked a wider assortment. Also, it would be helpful to learn the density planted in relation to the photo shown.

                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
