Rocket Larkspur, also known as wild Delphinium, is famous in the dried flower trade, but we prefer it growing in the garden! Gorgeous spikes of red, blue, pink, white and purple add unique color and texture to the summer garden or meadow and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Rocket Larkspur is extremely easy to grow and can be planted in almost any spot. And yes, be sure to plant extra for cut bouquets – of course! All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Annual.

This wild delphinium is the annual so loved by dried flower arrangers. Spikes of red, deep blue and white flowers dry easily; they also add great color to meadows.

About the Floral Flag shown above: This 6-acre tribute to the 9/11 victims was planted by Bodger Seed Company in Lompoc, CA soon after the attacks. It was in full bloom by July 4, 2002. The flag included over 400,000 plants of this flower species, (Rocket larkspur) creating a bloom of over two million flowers.

I planted these in the spring of 2010 and was disappointed that they didn't seem to germinate, so I was surprised this year (2011) to see the vivid purple flowers (with the occasional white or pink) emerge in early summer. The stunning display they gave me was enough for me to forgive them for being a year late and I will be buying more. I'm going to try planting them in the fall to see if that helps them germinate on time.

First off, I have horrible clay soil, so I tend to look for flowers that thrive in poor conditions and require little maintenance. These little flowers germinated, grew and bloomed. However, the flowers were small and I had trouble with the leaves turning a brownish color. They ended up looking unsightly and weedy. They may do better in a mass container planting where it would be easy to pinch off the brown leaves and control growing conditions. They were too finicky for my wildflower bed, though.

Comments about American Meadows Rocket Larkspur Seeds:

I have just ordered this seed for the third year in a row. It is a reliable, prolific bloomer best scattered across a wide area. I have collected and saved its seeds these past two years, and supplemented with an additional seed purchase here. As the blooms begin to go to seed, the collection of these seeds makes my morning walk in my garden with my coffee an adventure: are there more seeds to harvest? After this year, I may produce enough seeds that I don't have to buy more!

Comments about American Meadows Rocket Larkspur Seeds:

We had a wet, cold spring followed by a summer drought. I had thrown these seeds in with the Midwest Wildflower mix. The mix did great, but I never saw any larkspur. Admittedly, the mix came up later than it might have with better weather, and perhaps that may have been the problem. Perhaps some seeds will survive this winter and come up next spring - if so, I'll definitely note it on a review.

Even though I planted these a month late - which is usually the kiss of death in Houston - I had fantastic yield of long lasting, beautiful flowers. My husband is even thrilled. We are already talking Bout what we will plant this coming fall.

Comments about American Meadows Rocket Larkspur Seeds:

I have planted Larkspur for a couple of years now, and each time the seeds grow into beautiful plants. I live in Zone 7 (Texas) and put out the seeds in early fall, cover them with a thin layer of dirt and water them daily for a week or so. In winter (January) 3-5 inch plants are showing, which then bloom in late Spring, early Summer. To have more blooms over a longer period of time, I also put out seeds in early Spring, using the same procedure as described above. I have an entire field of blue in my front lawn, which then lasts for months, and it's absolutely stunning. Each year, I tend to cut off the spent flowers (to make the garden look nicer), but, of course, this prevents them from re-seeding. If you can resist doing this, you shouldn't have to reorder seeds in the future, or only to fill in areas that are sparse.

                          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
