Flowers of the perennial version of the gaillardia are a little larger than the annual—often up to 3 or 4 inches across, for a real spectacle of color. Effect is so bright, fine flower snobs in the English garden literature often are “shocked” by the “horrid” clashing colors. Not so in nature—a wildflower meadow takes on all colors and loves them all! Common names range from Blanket Flower to Indian Blanket (usually reserved for the annual version) and Firewheel. Seed is fluffy when gathered. See annual, G. pulchella.

Comments about American Meadows Blanket Flower Seeds:

My experience is that to ensure successful germination it is extremely helpful to prepare planting site well. I planted in the fall well before first frost. It does pay off to remove weeds, grasses and broadleaf, including roots and to loosen top inch or so of soil. I also removed low limbs of adjacent trees to optimize lighting. Planting consisted of simply hand-broadcast seeds and walking over flower beds to insure seeds embedding into soil, not covering them with soil. I watered the beds until the seeds sprouted and appeared stable and growing. I also lightly raked dropped tree leaves so seedlings didn't get smothered. It's now mid-October and we've had continuous blooms since early May (Houston area).

I have tried tossing the same flower seeds in grassy and weedy areas. I would rate germination as poor to fair. Many plants that did start died as juveniles, probably from competition with existing grasses/weeds and inconsistent early-on hand watering.

Comments about American Meadows Blanket Flower Seeds:

I used Blanket flower on my land as it is drought resistant and easy to grow. I also like that the plants have bloomed 2 times this summer, and the Gold Finches have loved the seeds. I grew the plants in containers and transplanted them onto my land, the seed germinated well and have transplanted easily.

Comments about American Meadows Blanket Flower Seeds:

As mentioned by others, easy to grow, easy to care once plants are established. My main point I'd like to express is I live in an area that has a HUGE deer population. Every plant or bulb that is supposedly DEER PROOF I've tried gets eaten by deer. Blanket Flowers they rarely touch. Daffodils and blanket flowers are the only two things I've bought that are disliked by deer.
I bought a 1/4 pound of blanket flower years ago and the seeds are easy to collect for continual use year after year if collected at the right time. For the price, which is cheap here, you should try these beautiful flowers. Also as long as you water them the first month or so until when there is now rain and water every so often they will reward you with plants that have multiple flowers per plant. They are very drought resistant but watering them is a plus. Does well even in poor soil, sandy soil. DEER PROOF!!!

Comments about American Meadows Blanket Flower Seeds:

The Blanket flower is very colorful flower in red, yellow, that is very hardy and drought tolerant. It does like sandy soil and full sun light, but can survive in most soil types. In early summer the blanket of petals, emerge, to have ruffled appearance on the ends. The butterflies are drawn to the flowers for nectar.

Comments about American Meadows Blanket Flower Seeds:

This is one of my favorite plants found in the Southeastern seed mix. Blanketflower has showstopping colors great in a butterfly garden/natural area. Blanketflower plants have withstood drought on our clay soil and returned for several years now. They are the most dependable of the perennials from the mix, along with Coneflower and Gloriosa daisy.

                Blanketflower is a must-have!!!!

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
