Plant Information

Dame’s Rocket is often called “Wild Phlox” since the flowers are phlox-like in clusters on tall stems. However, these florets have only 4 petals (phlox have five), marking this species as a pink/purple member of the mustard family. Dame’s rocket is spectacular in early meadow bloom, and also carries a delightful clove-like scent. “Rocket” reflects the super-rapid growth in spring before bloom. The “Dame” in the name marks this flower as a favorite of women and mothers in medieval flower lore.

Comments about American Meadows Dame's Rocket Seeds:

The deer and elk eat almost everything I plant - or at least chew on it. They haven't bothered these at all. And there are at least 6 species of butterflies that love it. Planted on a steep slope in fir/aspen/spruce woods.

Comments about American Meadows Dame's Rocket Seeds:

Dames Rocket looks good, but is an invasive noxious weed that escapes easily into the surrounding areas and crowds out native species.

This is considered a dangerous invasive, native or not. Each plant creates ,Illinois of seeds and it will take over natural woodland areas. Use with extreme caiution.

Want butterflies? Plant this plant. Out of all the wildflowers and other flowers on my property the butterflies seem to like Dame's Rocket most of all. Planted in mass, this is a real attention-getter that seems to reseed itself readily and almost thrives on neglect. I've recommended this plant to many friends.

                          Q & A

                          Plant With These:

                          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
