This proven mixture offers full flower color and a great spread of species for places with little rainfall, or those areas that are difficult to water. Like any seed, this drought-tolerant mix requires moisture to sprout, but is quite self-sufficient once growth begins.

This premium mix includes 25 wildflowers: 14 annuals for first-year color. Plus 11 perennials/biennials for second and successive years’ bloom.

I wrote an earlier review that said I wasn't sure what I had going in the front yard. But now, it a WOW. I live in the high desert and growing season starts at the end of April. For the first 2 months, there was mostly just green. Then some flax, then some california poppies, but now the whole front yard is full of flowers. I can't wait to see what it looks like next year. Every morning I go out to see what's new and there are hundreds of happy bees in the flowers. We water once a week for about 30 min.

I was hesitant about purchasing seeds for the hot and dry Phoenix climate. As I suspected, the seeds didn't germinate at all. The fact that planting the seeds on top of the soil is the proper method according to the instructions, I had reservations about this. Even though I watered daily as instructed, the Arizona sun along with the winds dried the soil quickly. We frequently have high winds here, and I don't know if the seeds blew away after drying, or they were defective from the start. I would not purchase again. I still can't believe after almost 2 months not one seed germinated.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

User of American Meadows seeds for 13 years. Located in Poconos of Northeast Pa. Only disappointment to date. Used in dry area that I prepared with bagged topsoil. Watered well until seedlings established. Achillea overwhelmed area....very few of the other 24 seeds made any progress...Won't use again. Will not ever use a mix containing achillea again and would not recommend to any of my gardening friends.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

I live in what the pioneers called the Great American Desert. I have tried for several years now, to no avail, to get something to survive in our south yard besides weeds. I needed something that would 1) grow in rocky hardpan clay soil; 2) need minimal water and attention; 3) handle full southern exposure and our blast-furnace summer winds. I didn't bother to destroy or remove the existing growth, just loaded a pound of dry area mix in my spreader and let 'er rip. Sure enough, I now have baby's breath, poppies, and some bachelor buttons blooming, with cosmos and other coming right along. I'm going to plant another pound in the fall, and next year we plan to do the same with the west yard (our front yard.)

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

This mix is one of the best I have ever used. Flowers are diverse in size, color, and bloom periods. Very little watering required after establishment, however getting them established did require frequent waterings. I found it worked well to mix this with a vibrant annual mix to add some extra color. I will be using this mix for many years.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

We sowed in later spring along our house and a small 3-4' wide area between a fence and drop off that wasn't able to be mowed. Along the house we've gotten more variety, such as garland daisies and african daisies, while the small "peninsula" has mostly cosmos and coreposis with a few cornflower thrown in. Should be interesting to see what comes back next year. We've gotten many compliments on "peninsula" bed (which is more visble). I didn't water either bed after sowing because we had pretty frequent rains and everything seemed to germinate fine.

We live in an extreme area. Over 6,000ft, desert, and very windy. Did not know if any of these seeds would grow. We had to water to combat the extreme wind and heat but they were wonderful and brought some 'life' back to the desolate desert we have moved to. We will be ordering more next year. Its a different look from nursery, potted type plants and the birds love it!

I live in the Texas panhandle and am new to the area.. I had been told that because of the drought it was hard to get things to grow here. I was more than a little surprised when given some water the plants started going up and up. These ended up more like bushes. They topped out at about 5'8" tall. They still haven't finished blooming and they filled the strip garden in my back yard.

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

We used 2lb of the wildflower area seeds in a 1,200-1,400 sq. ft. area. After 14 days, almost nothing had sprouted despite our having intensively weeded the area for months and having watered each day. I called the company and their service was fantastic! Not only did they send us replacement seeds, we sent in pictures of the garden and of what growth we did have for their comments. They helped us to reseed the area and we ended up amending the soil--not necessarily good for most wildflowers, but we think we lost all the topsoil when we rigorously weeded the garden. I will have to update as the garden grows--just sprouts now--but after all my weeding, I can recognize crabgrass easily and thus far I have less than 10 on the entire site. I am amazed at how fast the poppies are growing. I have a poppy garden whose growth, despite seeding, reseeding and frequent watering over 8 mos. is not growing quickly in comparison. I will have to write back in two months to definitively describe the beauty we now have in our back yard, replacing the extremely annoying crabgrass.

We put in a large area of the back yard mixed with other seeds like we did when we did this in Chicago... but ..... perhaps not enough sun as it only gets half sun and half shade depending on time of day. Just did not get what I expected....

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

I don't tend to rave about things, especially anything garden...for almost everything there are pros and cons. But this seed mix has been amazing. Our eyesore has become the most gorgeous part of our yard. Our climate is very dry and gets quite hot in the summer but freezes in the winter. We live in the city and are terrible about watering that dry patch between the sidewalk and the street. Several years ago we became fed up with the mixture of dead grass and thriving weeds. We dug up and threw away enough of the sod to make space, lay down about 4 layers of newspaper, covered it with tree shred, and left it for a year trying to decide what to do. We bought 1/4 pound of this seed mix and spread it over the area in early spring. We got a sprinkling of flowers the first year. We bought a second bag and added it in the fall. Last year was very pretty. This year, WOW! The area is packed with flowers continuously. When I introduce myself to neighbors, they always say, "Oh, the house with all the flowers!" People seem to think we're some sort of brilliant gardeners and we're not. We do nothing to care for it except to grab really obvious weeds if we happen to see them, and every fall we cut everything off at ground level and break it off and leave it all there to let it decompose...just as a natural meadow would. We watched the Back to Eden Film and realized why it worked so well. I highly recommended this seed mix for the lazy gardener who wants amazing results!

I sowed this pack along with All Anual pack on the 1st Day of Spring this year on a steep sandy dry slope. Watered daily... And a few weeks later, as of today the slope is in full bloom with the early bloomers Baby's Breath and Sweet Aslyum with a few other wildflowers.

Every few days new flowers appear. Looking forward to a full season of a variety of blooms this year and years to come!

Comments about American Meadows Dry Area Wildflower Seed Mix:

I spread 1 lb of the dry area mix last fall on part of the yard that borders the road. Rather than a patch of weeds, I figured a low-maintenance spread of wildflowers would be great.

I've been nervous all spring, as a dry April/May plus little early growth left me worried that perhaps things hadn't germinated. However, now that it's finally starting to warm up, I'm seeing the early flowers (California Poppies, baby's breath) blooming. Still not sure whether the entire area I planted will be covered, but goot to see that there's signs of real life! Just takes some patience.

The other challenge is that I can't really tell the difference between the perennials that will bloom next year and the weeds that are coming up with them. Oh well, I guess I'll check back in with the reviews in another year!

I used this seed mix in two places - looking for attractive erosion control without much maintenance. One area is pure sand (like a kid's sandbox) and the other is a little more loamy - both sprouted in just a few weeks, with little water or attention! I'm now enjoying the blooms and looking forward to next year. Very pleased with the performance in an area where I really though nothing would grow due to bad soil and my lack of attention!

I live south of San Antonio, TX and we experienced a terrible drought last year. Despite the drought and extremely sandy soil, I purchased a pound of the dry area wildflower seeds (but only used about 1/4 of it). I hoped for the best and forgot about them after that. What a difference some rain makes!! I already had a yard full of bluebonnets so this mix really popped out in the river of blue. The scent of all the wildflowers as I stepped out my door was heavenly. This winter I'll be throwing out the rest of the seeds and I should have quite the show next year. I can't wait! I plan on buying zinnia seeds in bulk to make some borders around my fence-line.

I have used a number of prairie mixtures from American Meadows and have been completely satisfied with all of them... except this one. I planted it under maple trees and watered often. It started out okay, but not as well as I expected. At this time, there are only about a dozen small flowers and the rest is completely bare. I'll try again next Spring, but I'm not hopeful.

I used these seeds in a garden area next to my house. I wanted to plant something that would not require a lot of maintenance, but would provide colorful flowers. This mix was a great selection for that purpose. The mix provided a wide variety in both colors and sizes of flowers. They still look good today, I have been surprised by the long-lasting blooms!

We are only three feet above sea level and the ground is usually moist in most areas, but I have one raised bed that seems to always be dry no matter what I do. These seeds have done very well in that bed and have added color to a problem area of my yard. The colors make me smile.

                                                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
