One of the world’s most popular wildflowers, red poppies – also known as corn poppy or flanders poppy – is an iconic addition to any garden or meadow. This easy-to-grow mixture contains a colorful mixture of red, pink, white and double poppies, creating a fantastic statement in the summer garden. Like all red poppies, this mix is deer resistant, attracts pollinators and is long blooming. We think this mixture is a ‘must have’ for any wildflower gardener! All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Annual.

Probably the world’s most popular wildflower, red poppy is also called Corn Poppy, American Legion Poppy, and Flanders Poppy. A Reverend Wilks in Shirley,England, developed what is known today as “Shirley Poppies” from selecting specimens of this species from the wild. His work resulted in this broad mix of colors and single/double flower forms. Most wildflower gardeners prefer this mixture (red, pink, white, single, double, even “picotee” bicolors) of colors for their poppies over the solid red basic species. See P. rhoeas, Red Poppy (all red).

I had these in several flower beds. I threw down a lot of them not expecting a good germination rate. Wow, was I wrong. They had a extremely high success rate. I had solid poppies, all colors. I love poppies of all kinds and they were just absolutely fantastic. I had thousands in a multitude of colors. I took so many pictures. If you like poppies you really must buy these. I so regret the comment the lady made that brought the review rate down. Soil condition or something else must have affected her seeds. These seeds definitely deserve above a 5 star rating. I just threw mine down and they grew. No muss no fuss just pure enjoyment. Everyone who saw them was mesmerized. Each one had breathtaking beauty.

I followed all of the instructions provided by American Meadows, who responded in a timely manner to my e-mail of questions before I ordered. However, out of 1/4 pound of seed, I only had 8 flowering plants. The germination was about 50%, but only those few matured. However, I planted some cosmos seeds I had left from the year before(also from American Meadows) at the same time and those are still blooming like champs. I think poppies are just pickier. But, I will try again next year.

Comments about American Meadows Mixed Red Poppy Seeds:

I planted these on a slope in front of my house after a hard frost in Connecticut. Well, then we went on to have a very mild winter and in February they were coming up (as were the daffodils, iris, etc), so that was exciting to see. And then we had several days of frost - the coldest of the winter - and they were gone. Of course this isn't a reflection of the seeds, and so I'm going to buy some more poppy seeds and hope for the 5 star rating. But it's something to watch out for.

Comments about American Meadows Mixed Red Poppy Seeds:

I live in zone 6A and have found sowing poppy seeds in the winter right before a snow is the best time.

They begin their show right after spring bulbs die off.

I have had so many compliments on their beauty. They are a must!!!

Comments about American Meadows Mixed Red Poppy Seeds:

None of the reds came up. To my delight, American Meadows tried to help me with the planting (which is a no brainer with these but I appreciated it!) and then sent me replacement AND 3 large bags of another mix. Amazing service. I'll always buy here in the spring and fall.

I have an area near my garage that is far too steep to mow or use a weed wacker safely so this year I decided to try poppies. They are so stunning that I will be clearing out more grass for next year and planting the entire length of my driveway. What a joy to see coming home after work!

Comments about American Meadows Mixed Red Poppy Seeds:

The seeds sprouted easily, and blooms are beautiful and are a very rich red and pink. The basic form has single flowers, with more flowers as the other fades. The size varied by the soil in which the plant grew, the poorer the soil, the smaller and paler the blooms. They do make good cut flowers if gathered early in the morning just as the green sheath is opening from the petals, but the blooms do not last long.

I sowed these along with several other poppy varieties from AM in pots and transferred them to the ground after they germinated. Good germination rate, but I cant be sure which varieties germinated because the seedlings are still tiny.

these grew and bloomed just about everywhere i tossed the seeds. i bought a pound and literally "went to town" sprinkling them like fairy dust in vacant lots, ditches, even gravel! one particularly large and profuse blooming specimen seemed to like growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. i couldn't be more pleased.

I live in Zone 7 (Texas) and put out the seeds in the fall. I covered them with a very thin layer of peat moss and watered them for a week or so. I don't think the watering did anything, because it wasn't until late March/early April when there seemed to be the first sign of life. From then on, however, (and with regular watering as we had practically no rain this Spring), the poppies began to grow like wild and from about May on, they were blooming (they are still blooming). Beautiful range of colors, big blooms, lots of blooms, just stunning ... They flower at the same time as my Larspurs (see my feedback for them) and put on a lovely show! I'm not sure that the germination rate was superb (I bought a pound I think and I don't have millions of blooms), but my garden is covered in lots of blooms and I'm very happy with the outcome.

                              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
