USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Comments about American Meadows Red Wildflower Seed Mix:

Live in USDA zone 7, though most experienced gardeners here consider it 5 or 6. The soil on our property is alkaline, salty and clay, not easy to grow in compared to other places I have lived. I did add lots of well aged mulch. Some flowers grew well, others I never saw but it filled the space beautifully. My favorite was the zinnia. It was lovely, strong, great for vases and long lasting. Flandese poppy another one I loved. Smaller than other poppies I have grown and a mix of orange, red and pink, amaranthus but I would call it hot pink and not red. Mexican hat was a pretty flower but only saw a few, small plants that seemed to have difficulty in the shade of the others. The clovers grew well, but in this area considered weeds and not for flowerbeds. Flowers I didn't see at all: pheasant's eye, dwarf plains coreopsis, California poppy, standing cypress, scarlet flax, [although blue flax did very well in the back], maltese cross, annual phlox [waaah]. One did grow, but I don't know the flower.
I was too ill to plant until late May and had flowers till early November. Wow!

Comments about American Meadows Red Wildflower Seed Mix:

Unfortunately, many of these seeds did not germinate in my garden area which was disappointing because I anticipated vibrant red colors throughout the summer. However, the flowers that did come up were amazing and grew quite well. The poppies were especially striking from July-August. My seeds from American Meadows almost always germinate successfully so perhaps this is just a particularly picky mix to grow.

          Q & A

          Plant With These:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
