Description
Everybody knows "Common Milkweed," the tough leathery plant with the dusty lavender blooms that are favored by Monarch butterflies. Swamp Milkweed is close to this variety, but much more elegant. The leaves are less coarse, and the plant is usually sort of willowy and tall. Best of all, the blooms are cherry-red and also welcome monarchs and hummingbirds. As you can tell by the name, this wildflower prefers wet ground, but in full sun.

    Comments about Swamp Milkweed Seeds:

During winter 2014/2015 I sowed three different types of milkweed- Common, Swamp, and Butterflyweed. The Swamp Milkweed is far and away the easiest to get to germinate and transplant. With cold stratification I had good germination rates and the resulting seedlings have been potted up. It will soon be time for them to go into the garden. Very happy with these seeds.

            Comments about Swamp Milkweed Seeds:

I ordered three packets of seed and received them quickly. I planted 2 packets of twenty milkweed seeds per packet and and only 2 seeds came up. Of those two, only one survived planting in the garden. I was very disappointed.

                  Comments about Swamp Milkweed Seeds:

Most milkweed seeds need a period of cold to break their dormancy. Spring planted milkweed seeds will have a very low germination rate. To overcome this, scarify the seeds, i.e. put them in a plastic bag in damp (not wet) sand and keep them in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 6 weeks. Then plant outside or in pots. Tropical milkweeds do not need this.

                        Comments about Swamp Milkweed Seeds:

I plante 20 of my 45 seeds. Only eight sprouted and grew . They were very slow to sprout. After sprouting they grew pretty fast. mudch beeter than the Common Milkweeds I planted. After all danger of frost I planted them. They have grown very well, and I am satisfied with the plants I have. They did not bloom this year. They had 5 Monarch larva, that grew almost to two inches , but some kind of predator got them, so no Monarchs .
I still have 25 seeds , and I will try them in the spring.

I have this planted around the house and in the prairie restoration. The older plant,4+ years, this year had 20 caterpillars on it at one time. Completely leafless when the migrating generation was done.
