Organic Certification "Russian Mammoth" is one of the true garden giants, growing up to 14 ft. But the flowers, which range from 12 to 14" across are still lovely, with lush golden petals and centers that are not so filled with seeds that they topple over. This one is a giant beauty, and makes a spectacular, fast-growing screen or background for your garden.

we grew these along two sunny outer walls of our house. They sprouted within 3 days and were off to the races to a final 12'-15' height. The giant heads were kept for this year's planting.

A late summer wind storm toppled the entire garden. It's something to try to address ahead of time.

These sunflowers grew to a trememdous height! I can see why this type is known for winning county fairs! Grew strong and healthy, and would definitely use these same type next season.

I use the product for a beautiful addition to the summertime. I get so excited to see this HUGE plant grow taller and taller!!! It is such a HAPPY plant. It even draws the golden finch here in California. The love to eat the leaves but they tend to start with the lower ones and work up as the plant grows.

We tried planting these but the birds and squirrels consumed them in a matter of hours. So we planted them indoors and transferred them to the garden when the seed where gone. The ground hog got them this time. I therefore cannot rate them.

Comments about American Meadows Organic Sunflower Seeds Russian Mammoth:

I bought what I thought where the Giant Russian Sunflower Seeds, but I guess they mixed them up. Here its August and my tallest plant is just over 4' high and the largest flower head is just under 4'' wide. When the plant develops its head, the head dies with in a couple of days. I do have a lot of buds but who knows how they will turn out. All of the plants are very inconsistent in size, 2 plants may be the same height but one will have a 1'' thick stalk and the other about 1/4 of an inch stalk, it doesnt make any sense. Some plants are almost 4' and others are a few inches and look like weeds.
I live in the country and water them at least 1" of water a week. Down the street in the ditch are hundreds of tall blooming sunflowers. This is what I will harvest and plant for next year and save my money and forget about so called Giant Russians.

We live out in the middle of cotton fields, and have no fence. We also have hard clay soil. I threw these seeds out along the border of our property, and they are coming up beautifully! I am very impressed that they managed to sprout in the clay soil! I can't wait to watch them bloom.

Huge blooms! Everything I expected! The only thing I didn't expect was the drooping heads. They apparently got so big, they bend over and face the ground so you really cant enjoy looking at them. This is probably true of large sunflowers, I've just never seen it before.

used my sunflowers for bouquets at home, as gifts, and even in my church. everyone commented about how beautiful the sunflowers were. the bright green centers were such a suprise i sometimes just cut one flower and it was a beautiful arrangement by itself. The birds were so cute hanging upside down on the large dried seedheads eating the seed. will definitely order again.

Finally starting to pop up on 4th of July. Not responding in every planting context-only small percentage seems to be emerging(planted a full pound plus another type of sunflower)),but am anxious to see how they look in August.

                                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
