USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Like other Sunflowers, Mexican Sunflowers prefer as much sun as possible. Plant them in a sunny spot in the meadow or back border of your garden and they will bloom that season. Try dead-heading spent blooms to encourage a longer bloom time. If done correctly, Mexican Sunflowers can bloom from June to frost. A lovely addition to any meadow or garden.

Comments about American Meadows Mexican Sunflower Seeds:

I surrounded my chicken pen with Mexican sunflowers last summer and could not have been more pleased with the result. Butterflies, bees and even hummingbirds enjoyed their nectar throughout the summer, and I kept fresh flowers on my dining table until the first frost. This year I'll sow zinnias and yellow Mexican sunflowers among the beautiful orange sunflowers and can't wait to see the beautiful mixture of colors.

Comments about American Meadows Mexican Sunflower Seeds:

Very tall, many blooms on each stalk, wonderful couple and excellent for cutting flowers. They are smaller then traditional sun flowers but make up for their size with the number of blooms. Be sure to plant at the back of your garden as they absolutely take over with their perfusion of color. Mine are as tall as I am

Comments about American Meadows Mexican Sunflower Seeds:

I started planting Mexican Sunflowers 12 years ago. Big bright reddish orange flowers look spectacular. I live on busy street. My house and last two houses on the block have tall retaining walls with a 3' strip of grass, a sidewalk and then a strip of grass along the curb. The Mexican Sunflowers are planted along the retaining wall, around neighbors mailboxes and utility poles. Brightens up the neighborhood. You only have to weed when the plants are small as they crowd out weeds as they grow. In my backyard the plants attract a zillion Monarch Butterflies. Takes a hard frost to kill.

Used for late blooming - the deer left these alone till last and then just nibbled. Still going strong in October. Finches love them.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
