Pollinator Partnership

The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge (MPGC) is a nationwide call to action to preserve and create gardens and landscapes that help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across America. We will move millions of individuals, kids and families outdoors and make a connection between pollinators and the healthy food people eat.

This is the standard mixture of solid color blooms--growing to about three feet tall. They're great for all-summer color in wildflower meadows, and just as good in more formal gardens. They're super-easy from seed, started indoors or out. With these, you'll be cutting bouquets all summer long.

Easy! Easy! Why everybody loves Zinnias: Probably no plant can give you more color for less work. It's because the zinnia is one of the easiest plants to grow from seed (any child can do it, and many do!), they'll give you every color but blue, and they bloom all season up until frost. Can you think of another flower that does all that?

How to grow them: Good full sun is really all that's required, although some of the newer hybrids will even bloom in partial shade. As for water, they don't need much, since they're from hot desert-like habitats. Soil? Almost any soil will do, but they prefer fast-draining gritty soil, if you have that available.

Zinnia seeds are perfect for starting indoors to have bloom early. But be sure you wait until every frost is gone, and the soil has warmed up a bit before setting them out. They're super-sensitive to frost--after all, these plants are from frost-free regions, and don't like cold soil. If you'd rather, you can just wait until spring arrives, and sow them outside. They're very undemanding.

The Wildflower that's been all dressed up for years. There about 20 species of Zinnia in the wild, all in the arid, rocky soils of North, Central and South America, most common in Mexico. If you saw the wild plants, you'd be amazed, since Zinnias are one of our most heavily-hybridized wildflowers, and the somewhat "ragged" originals look nothing like our garden beauties. That's because hybridizers discovered them early, and have been "working on them" for decades.

The Wild Ones The most commonly hybridized species is Zinnia elegans, a common wild plant in Mexico. But in recent years, work has been done on some of the other species. Like the dahlia (also from Mexico) the Zinnia takes quickly and willingly to almost anything the hybridizers want to do: Taller, shorter, or bigger flowers. Multi-colored flowers. You name it, and they seem to be able to do it to Zinnias.

Because of that, these flowers have been staples among major color-makers in gardens since your great-grandmother's time, and more and more beautiful zinnias are created for our gardens almost every year.

I fell in love with Zinnias a long time ago, and when I moved to my new home, I wanted to augment the natural beauty that was here with more bright colors that would last a long time during the warmer Seasons. Zinnias come in so many bright colors and last until the first frost of late Fall, are hardy, and easy to plant with out requiring much maintenance, which as someone with a breathing disability was very desirable. I started with adding them to the mixed wildflowers that I planted along the tree line in the pasture behind my house, and was so pleased with the results that I soon began planting small plots in five different locations around the house, as well as by my mailbox at the end of my driveway. Every year I am complemented by people I meet who drive by and say they look forward to seeing them each year. Even during the drought we had a couple of years ago, the Zinnias survived and bloomed even where I was unable to water them. They seem to attract more butterflies than most other plants. They are one of my favorite flowers and I haven't seen any downside to them.

I tilled the area last fall and cast the seeds at that time. This spring very few of them came up compared with the amount of seed I cast, but that said, the ones that came up are real stunners! I'd definatly order them again, I would just order a lot more.

Comments about American Meadows Zinnia Seeds:

Planted these for the first time last year. I have never seen such amazing results all from tiny seeds. The bees and birds loved them too. They lasted late into autumn. I just placed another order for this year and we are going to plant them everywhere and between other plants. They thrived and stood up against intense heat, sun and humidity here in NC. We also had very little rain into the summer and we only watered occasionally due to restrictions and the zinnias rallied. We have that challenging clay but it did not stop these beauties. These will be our favorite year after year. Thank you for offering them.

Have a large area 50' x 100' an wanted color. Every year for the last 5 years I've used your zinnias to fill it. Quick germination and growth so weeds are not a problem and great area to get cut flowers from. Disease and pest resistant so pretty much throw the seeds down, rake and just stand back.

I planted these seeds much too thickly. I'm used to the seeds from the garden center not coming up. I think every seed planted came up! I couldn't bear to pull them, so I just let them grow. The would have been much larger if they had the proper space, but that was my fault. Next spring I will know better, and only use about half as much seed. I planted these seeds in September, and they are blooming like crazy now in mid October. They are abolutely beautiful, and the only thing I've had to do is water them once.

I am very happy with all American Meadows Products!
I broke my shoulder in April and thought I would not be able to have any flowers this summer. Thanks to this wonderful seed combination I am still having blooms in October with very little "gardening" on my part.

I use these to attract beneficial insects to my vegetable garden as well as to other landscaping in my yard! When I plant these the butterflies and bee's are everywhere!! (that's a good thing!!)

Easy to use, planted directly in the ground. Used in my native gardens with other native perennials and annuals. You need full sun. I still have flowers and new ones coming, and it's the beginning of October!

Comments about American Meadows Zinnia Seeds:

I've been buying these wonderful zinnia seeds in large quantities for many years. They are an amazing fresh addition to all my gardens: in Florida all winter, in town during the Spring, and at our summer cottage all summer. I've recommended these seeds to all my friends!

I just fall sowed 1/4 lb. of these seeds for the second year in a row. These seeds are combined with a 1/4 lb. of dwarf cosmos and few perennials in a ~ 6' x 20' bed. The cosmos/zinnia combination was gorgeous last year and it was very popular with the American Goldfinches and butterflies. Both the zinnias and dwarf cosmos had healthy germination rates and were problem free throughout the growing season. I wish that I had photos to share, I will be sure to take some pics next year.

I have a lot of friends with whom I share my seed. They, without exception, bragged and bragged on the success they had with the zinnia seed. The flowers were large and they bloomed for weeks and weeks.

Delivery was on time and as expected. The zinnia's seem to bloom later than many of the native natural growth (weeds) and therefore require some cultivation in a meadow scenario. Great for informal beds near the house.

                                                  USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
