‘Splendens’ Armeria, or Sea Thrift, is a compact perennial that blooms with baubles of raspberry-pink flowers from mid-to-late spring. With a perfect pairing of evergreen grass-like foliage topped by profusely blooming flowers, it is a delightful addition for walkways or garden borders with well-drained soil. To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
‘Splendens’ Armeria is a welcome addition to a sunny rock garden, pathway, border, or container, where it will slowly spread. It is useful as a groundcover and is not fussy. It prefers lean, infertile soils; if planted in richer soils, the leaves tend to fall outwards leaving a bare center. Plant in a sunny spot with good drainage, and water regularly to establish; once mature, it is a drought-tolerant, low maintenance perennial. It is virtually disease and pest-free. The blossoms make nice cut flowers too. When blooming is done, shear off the spent flowers for nice clumps of dark green foliage. Armeria tolerates salty and seaside areas also, lending to its common name, Sea Thrift
