The tall, feathery plumes of 'Vision In Red' Astilbe rise like regal spires above handsome bronze-green foliage. Rosey red flower buds darken to a plum or fuschia color as they open and mature to create a dramatic midsummer display. A mound of fern-like foliage remains attractive all season, adding texture to shade gardens and borders. This easy-to-grow cultivar is more tolerant of heat and drought than other Astibles, and is also resistant to deer, rabbits, and most pests. (Astilbe chinensis)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Showing off with dramatic shades of reddish-purple plumes, the tall, airy flowers of 'Vision in Red' (PP#11965) bring welcome color to part-shade locations. Plants in the Visions series of Astilbes have greater tolerance for heat and drought than most Astilbes, making them a good choice for reducing watering needs in the garden. One of the few flowers that produces richly colorful flowers in full or partial shade, Astilbes are beloved not only for their striking beauty, but also for their reliability, easy care, and resistance to deer, rabbits, and pests. Astilbes feature handsome fern-like foliage, and stiff stems that hold the elegant flower plumes aloft without any staking. Planted en masse, their fern-like foliage provides a rich until the Astilbes' blooms take center stage. Astilbes prefer moist soil and may require regular watering. They are a classic addition to perennial borders, woodland gardens, and shade gardens. Native to Asia, these beautiful plants and their hybrids have transformed the possibilities of moist, shaded gardens. Plant extras for cutting — the long-lasting flowers are stunning in bouquets.
