The Best Meadows Start With Regional Wildflowers

Regional Wildflower Mixes - Northeast Pollinator Mix

Our Northeast Pollinator Wildflower Mix in full bloom in its first year at a customer's home.

No matter why — or where — you grow wildflowers, the first step in creating a successful wildflower meadow is to start with the best seed for your region. In the 35+ years we’ve been growing and selling wildflowers, we’ve had the opportunity to speak with gardeners all around the country to learn what they're hoping for from meadows of every size.

"Quick, bold color," "to support pollinators," and "to restore native landscapes" are the 3 reasons we hear time and again. We took these ideas and paired them with our wildflower expertise to specially formulate our regional wildflower mixtures. Year after year, these have been our most popular seed mixes and we never tire of the gorgeous meadow photos our customers send our way!

We’re the only seed supplier that has taken the time to personalize pollinator -friendly and native seed mixtures for each specific region and climate of the US. No matter where you’re growing — on acres of land or in a small plot in a city garden — we have the right regional mixture designed just for you.

We've formulated three different regional wildflower mixtures for each part of the country: a classic regional mixture with dozens of varieties, a native regional mixture with over 10 native species, and a pollinator regional mixture with dozens of species including host plants and nectar-rich flowers that bloom all season long. We're always getting questions about the difference between these mixtures and thought we'd take the time to talk about the benefits of each and what they can add to your landscape.

Regional Wildflower Mixtures: Classic Formula

We created our first regional seed mixtures in 1981 and in the 37 years since have tinkered with the species based on gardeners’ feedback. Today, our regional wildflower mixtures are our best mixes for quick, easy color. Many of these mixtures contain over 20 species with a large collection of annuals, which means they offer up explosive color in the first season. The varieties in each mixture grow well regionally and have plenty of perennial species to naturalize and bloom year after year. We’ve also designed these mixtures to flower from spring until fall so you’ll always enjoy something in bloom.

Did you know? All of our mixtures are 100% pure seed, which you won’t find in any of the big garden centers. See how our mixtures stacked up against other retailers.

Takeaway: Our regional wildflower mixtures are the best choice for the most variety of species, first season color, and are extremely affordable.

Regional Wildflower Mixes - Southwest Native Mix

Our Native Southwest Mixture contains colorful California Poppies, Lupine, and more.

Regional Wildflower Mixtures: Native Mixes

After formulating our classic regional mixtures, we heard from gardeners throughout the country that they wanted to bring their meadows back to their roots — meaning they wanted to restore their habitat to feature only native wildflowers to their region. So back in 2000, we created our native regional mixtures with over a dozen native wildflowers for each part of the country. These mixes are a great choice for gardeners looking to protect soil, conserve water, and restore habitat with colorful, low-maintenance flowers. These mixtures are also an easy — and safe — way to help and attract local pollinators and wildflowers.

Takeaway: Our Native Regional Mixtures are for gardeners who want to plant wildflowers native to their area and enjoy color all season long, year after year. These mixes feature wildflower varieties naturally found in your geographic area and are the only mixtures you’ll find with such a large assortment of native seeds.

Regional Wildflower Mixtures: Pollinator Mixes

With the recent awakening that we need to do everything we can to plant for pollinators, gardeners let us know they wanted a wildflower mixture specially formulated to do just that. In just the few short years since we crafted these regional pollinator mixtures, they’ve become some of our most popular mixtures. Each mix contains nectar-rich flowers all pollinators and essential host plants for buterflies in your neck of the woods. We are proud to be the only national wildflower brand creating pollinator mixes for different regions of our country!

Did you know? All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO and neonicotinoid-free, which means you can plant for pollinators with confidence.

Takeaway: If you’re looking to plant for pollinators, our regional pollinator mixtures are the best choice. They provide nectar and breeding grounds for pollinators from the early season all the way through fall, year after year. Bonus: they look gorgeous, too!

Regional Wildflower Mixtures: How To Get Started

You may be getting excited about adding a regional wildflower mix to your landscape this season, but aren't sure where to start. That’s where we come in! We have dozens of planting guides to help you figure out how much seed you’ll need, how to prepare your area, as well as best practices for seeding, aftercare, and everything else you need to know about planting wildflowers. This type of info sets us apart from other retailers; we’re your one stop shop for all things wildflowers!

Wildflowers 101: Where to Start:

One of the reasons why we love wildflowers so much — and built our business around them — is the ease with which anyone can grow them and enjoy a spectacular landscape. So whether you’re an expert or a first-time gardener, our regional wildflower mixtures are sure to be your recipe for wildflower success — guaranteed. And if you're just starting with wildflowers, consider planting a raised bed or large planter box for your first season. You can see how the wildflowers grow in your area and — if like most of us — you're hooked, the next season you can start incorporating wildflowers into your lawn, other garden beds, and everywhere else!
