Cut Away!
By Amanda
One of the greatest rewards of a garden bursting in blooms is being able to cut a few of your favorites to bring inside for a gorgeous summer bouquet, or to give to a lucky friend. Those who can’t seem to have enough fresh flowers should consider planting a cut flower garden – It makes cutting blooms guilt-free! There are countless varieties of bulbs and perennial plants that are perfect for planting to create blooms for cutting all season long.
Flower Bulbs For Beautiful Bouquets
Spring-Planted Bulbs that fare very well as cut flowers are Dahlias, Gladiolus, Oriental Lilies, Peacock Orchids, Calla Lilies, and Crocosmia. Fall-Planted Bulbs provide early-spring blooms, and garden classics such as Tulips, Daffodils, and Alliums are perfect for cutting for bouquets.
Try planting different colors of the same species to have a gorgeous rainbow of color to cut and bring inside at the same time.
Shop This Look: Lilies & Allium
Easy to grow lilies take up almost no space in the soil, but their flowers and foliage can add a big boost of color a few feet above ground. These reliable perennials take almost no ground space; set the flower bulbs in between other plants and the blooms will rise above their neighbors.
Allium, also called Ornamental Onion, is one of the most interesting blooms in the spring and summer garden. You'll find many variations in color, height and form - all are highly attractive as cut flowers and very deer resistant. Use Allium in repetition throughout the landscape to add a sense of cohesion to your beds.
Perennials For Beautiful Bouquets
Perennials that are great for your cut flower garden are Butterfly Bushes, Peonies, Siberian Iris, Yarrow, and Balloon Flower. Try planting items such as Astilbe, Russian Sage, and Ornamental Grasses to add texture and greenery to your arrangements.
