Doing Good With The STLCC Meramec Horticulture Program
American Meadows is proud to support the Saint Louis Community College (STLCC) Meramec Horticulture Program, where students hone their sustainable horticultural skills on a campus that features 10 acres of living laboratories and outdoor classrooms.
Putting Down Roots In St. Louis
In 2023, American Meadows began shipping our plants from a greenhouse in the St. Louis, Missouri region. Right away, we looked for ways to connect with this new community!
We were lucky to find a network of plant people at the STLCC. Carrie Coyne, the Horticulture Program Facilitator, was the perfect person to help us find new homes for our leftover plants at the end of the growing season.
Cultivating A Passion For Plants
The budding (pun intended!) horticulturists have eagerly integrated plants from American Meadow into the horticulture program’s outdoor classroom and gardens, and instructors are excited to incorporate some into class curricula.
Our plant donation provided lots of hands-on learning opportunities to enrichthe student experience, from learning about the corms of liatris and the bareroots of goat’s beard while potting them up, to learning proper planting methods for plugs of pink muhly grass and willowleaf sunflower in existing garden beds.
Much of the STLCC program curriculum focuses on native plant horticulture and healthy ecosystems. American Meadows was able to donate natie plant species and cultivars to help increase the diversity of the program's herbaceous native perennial collection.
From Carrie Coyne: "We are incredibly grateful for your generous donation of perennials to our college and the Horticulture program. Thank you for supporting our educational endeavors and helping to cultivate a love for herbaceous perennials in our students."
