'Fort Hill' Creeping Phlox delivers deep, rose-colored blooms that create a carpet of fragrant color on the garden floor in early spring. Star-shaped flowers pair beautifully with evergreen, needle-like foliage. Deer resistant and tolerant of dry spells, 'Fort Hill' is a great choice for spilling down banks and cascading over walls. Attracts butterflies. (Phlox subulata)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
4-6" tall x 18" wide. 'Fort Hill' Creeping Phlox boasts cheerful blooms dotted with a pair of magenta dots at the base of each petal. The petals surround a dark eye. Such details may be lost in the waves of flowers engulfing plants each spring, but add depth and dimension to the blooming masses. Plant in sweeps along the edges of cottage gardens, flagstone pathways, and rock walls. Tuck beneath nodding spring bulbs and vase-like shrubs. 'Fort Hill' blooms best in sunny locations and benefits from well-drained soils. Get plants off to a great start by planting at the proper depth. Set crowns just at or slightly above the surrounding soil surface. Cut stems back gently after flowering to encourage dense foliage, even growth, and vigorous blooms the following season.
Creeping Phlox is a favorite perennial groundcover in all growing regions. Cold hardy and heat tolerant, it creates a colorful carpet of low-growing, cheerful blooms that appear each spring atop a deep green mat of evergreen foliage. A rapid spreader, Creeping Phlox is masterful at filling spaces in between trees, rolling down gentle slopes or steep banks, and covering areas that are hard to care for with its solid swath of color. Very dependable and tolerant of many soil types. Deer resistant.
