USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
6-8" tall x 12-18" wide. Arctic Fire Dianthus (Dianthus deltoides) has vibrant, fringed blooms and spicy fragrance. Dianthus (commonly known as Garden Pinks) have delighted gardeners for centuries, it’s a mainstay of cottage gardens and providing nectar for migrating hummingbirds in spring. The low-spreading growth forms an ideal groundcover for stabilizing slopes and edging perennial beds. Blooms make lovely cuttings for nosegays and mini bud vases. The narrow, gray-green foliage provides winter color and a platform for summer perennials. Provide full sun and well-drained alkaline to neutral soil. Dianthus have low water needs and are drought tolerant once established making them ideal for rock gardens and xeriscaping. Plants tolerate afternoon shade in hot climates. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and shear plants lightly after flowering to promote tight, dense growth.
