Echinacea purpurea, or purple coneflower, produces long-lasting mauve pink to purple daisy-like flowers. Coneflower is one of the finest native perennials, attracting all types of butterflies, birds and bees to your garden. To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
This is the famous plains native called Purple Coneflower, but better known today by its botanical name: Echinacea.
For years before it was a favorite of the herbal medicine industry, it was always one of the loveliest wildflowers on the plains.
This large pink-to-purple daisy is a mainstay of all well-grown wildflower meadows, and is also a major colormaker in perennial borders. Magnus, this hybrid, is a bit shorter than the native plant, and the flower petals do not droop, as is often the case with the wildflowers.
You can easily grow this great native plant from our seed (See our Wildflower Seed Department) but to save a year or more, its really easy to plug in these plants.
