'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass creates a dramatic garden accent, with tall, slender, vertical growth and feathery plumes of shifting bronze color that stay in place year-round. An early bloomer, 'Karl Foerster' is a cool season grass that grows most rapidly in the spring season and produces notably early blooms. It is a clump-forming decorative grass, with an upward architectural growth habit, making it a dramatic specimen plant in garden or meadow. Torch-like plumes are widely used in dried flower arrangements. This sterile variety does not self-sow, is deer resistant, and notably cold hardy. (Calamagrostis acutiflora)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

36-60" tall  x 24-36" wide. 'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass is one of the most famous and popular Ornamental Grasses worldwide. Rising to about 5 feet, Feather Reed Grass is famous for waving in the wind, adding motion to the landscape, even with the slightest breeze. The tall elegant feathery blooms have a subtle purple-pink color when they're new in late spring, and mature into a warm buff color. These torch-like plumes are widely used in dried flower arrangements. ‘Karl Foerster’ is at home in moist soils and tolerant of part shade, salt, and humidity. Plus, Feather Reed Grass is super winter hardy, and requires almost no care. It’s also used very effectively in large containers on patios and terraces. Leave foliage standing over winter, for habitat and visual interest. Cut back  in late winter or spring before new growth emerges.
