USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Boasting blooms the color of the finest burgundy wine, 'Jowey Mirella' Ball Dahlia packs a powerful punch in the garden and bouquets. Flowers grow to about 3-4 inches wide. Like other ball dahlias, the abundant flowers are sturdy and long-lasting. The name 'Jowey' is a hybrid of the first and last name of the European breeder who has developed many of the best Ball Dahlias, Jozef Weyts. Dahlias are perennial in zones 8-10, but in cooler zones, tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring. Grow Dahlias in a sunny spot, in average soil that drains well. Keep moisture consistent once they begin to grow and enjoy a non-stop color parade.
