The soft pink blooms of 'Wizard of Oz' Ball Dahlias adorn the deep green foliage like ornaments, creating a delightfully whimsical yet subtly sophisticated display. Yellow flower buds give way to pastel pink petals. Long-lasting in cut flower arrangements, the perfectly formed 3-inch flowers provide a cooling complement to brighter-hued blooms, both in the garden and in bouquets. Compact plants are just the right size for the front of the border, small-space gardens, and containers.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Cute as a button, the 3-inch blooms of 'Wizard of Oz' Ball Dahlia are adorable spheres of tightly packed petals in subtle hues of pink and yellow. Wizard of Oz is known to drop petals once flowers are fully mature, so it’s recommended to harvest for cut flowers when blooms are one-third open. Dahlias are perennial in zones 8-10, but in cooler zones, tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring. Grow Dahlias in a sunny spot, in average soil that drains well. Keep moisture consistent once it begins to grow and enjoy a non-stop color parade. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and pinch off small side buds to encourage larger flowers if desired.
