Comments about American Meadows Fritillaria Early Fantasy:

I live in the high desert with low humidity, scarce rainfall and poor soil. So, I was a little worried about this fritillaria doing well in our area, since its description calls for loamy soil and average moisture, not terrible soil and hardly any moisture ;)
I needn't have concerned myself, because up it came, with its glossy, exotic looking leaves, thick stem, and large cluster of peachy colored flowers!
It almost looked like a crested, exotic bird of paradise!
This beauty bloomed about the same time as hyacinth and crocus, and was finishing up just as the first tulips started to make a showing.
I planted in fall, watered in and mulched with fallen tree leaves (that mostly blew away). No fertilizers.
Oh and in a raised planting area, so that the blooms were easy to see (we looked at it more from the side than from above).
My theory is that it bloomed so early that the heat and dry that we experience later in the season didn't have a chance to take hold. Fritillaria for the win!
Yes, desert hardy and yes, big and beautiful!
Now that I know how well they do, I am excited to plant more for next year.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
