Plant Information

Peacock Orchid Bulbs, also known as Gladiolus Acidanthera, are an absolute knock-out in the garden. They are extremely easy to grow and their display and blooms are some of the most exotic anywhere.

The name says it all. Like a peacock, these exquisite flowers will rise above the foliage and open like spectacular rare orchids. If you cut them, your arrangement will be absolutely spectacular. Many a gardener has tried this one and become totally addicted to growing it. Your neighbors have never seen it, and they'll never know that all you had to do was stick a few bulbs into the dirt, to have this incredible beauty in your garden. Enjoy!

From a gardener who's grown it: 'I planted ten corms in semi-frozen ground in early March of 2002. The soil and sun conditions varied from poor sandy soil with almost full sun to semi-rich soil in almost full shade. Regularly treated the soil with fertilizer every 2 weeks. None of the corms had sprouted by late spring, so I continued planting around them, figuring that the planting was mis-timed and the corms had died. In early summer, over a 3-week period, all of the corms sprouted. In mid-August, when the plants had reached anywhere from 18'-24', they began to flower. BEAUTIFUL, and with a nice (almost cologne-like) aroma. Blooms kept appearing until late October. Although this plant cannot survive the winters here in Zone 6b, they are SO easy to grow that I plant them every year (basically treating them as an annual). It seems that EVERY corm that I plant sprouts, so there's no guesswork involved.'.....from a subscriber to DavesGarden.com, gardening in Stratford, CT

Planting & Care

Us vs. The Big Box Store: Gladiolus Bulbs

Gladiolus Bulb Comparison

Each season, we head over to the big box store in our area and choose several Bulbs, Plants and Seeds to compare against our selection. This spring, we purchased 50 Gladiolus Bulbs to compare and the difference is quite revealing.

I’d like to start out by mentioning the difference in shopping experiences. I walked into the big box store and headed straight to the back, where I knew the garden section was. I walked through aisles of grills, patio sets and annual hanging baskets until I found someone to speak with. They quickly answered the phone and I waited several more minutes until I could ask, "Do you know where the Gladiolus Bulbs are?" They weren’t sure what I meant and finally an entire wall of Summer-Blooming Bulbs caught my eye. I chose their "Gladiolus Mix" bag of 50, which most resembled our Gladiolus Rainbow Mix, which we also carry in a bag of 50 bulbs.

When you shop on our site, we have a wealth of information on growing and caring for Gladiolus at your fingertips, as well as an extremely helpful and knowledgeable garden staff, several of which are certified Master Gardeners. We not only want you to have success in growing our products, but also want you to feel confident in everything you plant – Which is why we focus so intently on how-to information as well as have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We urge our customers to write reviews on our products, positive or negative, so you know what grows well in different areas and what doesn't. We also offer live chat and service over the phone 6 days a week, offering growing advice as well as helping to place orders.

This photo also helps to show the true difference between us and the Big Box Stores. Brian, one of our employees and garden-enthusiasts helps to explain why a bigger flower bulb is better.

"Several flower bulbs are part of the onion family, and because of this I like to use Onions as a representation of how important bulb size is. Which of the onions on your shelf go bad first? The smallest ones! Larger onions are more resilient, taking longer to dry out/rot and can withstand swings in temperature better. Flower bulbs are the same. Larger bulbs will withstand disease, draught, large amounts of moisture, and colder temperatures significantly better than the smaller ones. They also produce taller growth and larger blooms."

With American Meadows, you’re not only getting access to our thirty years of gardening experience, but are also receiving the largest, highest-quality bulbs available, inevitably producing larger, healthier blooms in your garden. Happy Gardening!

I ordered the peacock orchids based upon customer reviews and I was not disappointed. These looked exactly like the picture and they really drew interest to my flower garden. They bloomed for about 8-12 weeks and I must have looked at them every single day - very enjoyable.

I could not discern any discernible scent, but I was visited by butterflies, hummingbirds and bees that love nectar...so I would have to say that the wildlife approved. So far, I've been very happy with everything that I purchase from American Meadows and quite frankly, it's nice to have something in my flower garden that the neighbors have never seen. I'm a newbie at flower gardening and I have a neighbor that is a PRO, but my Peacock Orchids caused a few cars to slow down as they drove past the front yard. I was extraordinarily pleased. Don't judge me (lol).

These bulbs grew very well, and I love the delicate white flowers! We ordered a bunch of different bulbs and these came up the best and bloomed a fairly long time. I had never heard of them before, so I was anxious to see what I ended up with. Pleasantly surprised!

Comments about American Meadows Peacock Orchid or Gladiolus acidanthera:

I have planted these 3 previous times and did not enjoy the success I had this time. The bulbs produced shoots 3 feet high and blooms were consistent for over a month. Granted, they are planted inside a brick planterbox in front by our south-facing door. Nonetheless, they were spectacular and the fragrance was soft yet powerful enough to detect by or entrance several feet away.

I love these plants. They bloom in early August in VT and smell delicious. They need to be lifted here in VT, so this year, on advice from a friend, I planted them in containers and plan on bring the pots into the garage for the winter.

I planted these in 2 different parts of my garden. I only got blooms from a few, because rabbits ate so much of the greenery. Next time I think I would plant them in pots so I could elevate them and save them from rampant lagomorphs. They are very pretty and delicate-looking.

It's not a very practical flower for the rocky shores of the northeast coast- besides needing to be kept in moist soil the tubers need to be taken out over the winter - but treated as an annual they bloom through August and look spectacular .

I have these planted in a container on a hot, fifteenth-floor rooftop. They are performing splendidly. They are fragrant all day and night (unlike most summer-blooming white flowers), sturdy, beautiful. I may have to exercise some caution when winter comes, because the bulbs are not in the ground.

Grows and blooms quickly. I use them around taller plants that will bloom later in the season.

I bought 100 peacock orchids in the spring of 2013. They bloomed beautifully last summer, but not one even grew this year.

Small yard, acid soil and several microclimates. Tried in moist bed partial sun, and full sun bed that can be dry or fully draining. Just green leaves. Only American Meadows purchase that didn't flourish.

Looking at positive reviews, I would recommend with reservations.

These grew very well in a spot where Dutchman's Pipe roots probably sap a lot of water and nutrients. They got direct sun about half the day. The flowers really are like the pictures, and they bloomed into September here in lower Michigan. I think there would have been longer continuous blooms but one of our household cut flowers from them a lot, cutting the upper third of the stalk (not the best approach). On that note, the flowers do keep surprisingly long in a vase indoors. Really an all-around great little discovery. We'll be getting more.

Still in bloom now (October)! These are beautiful, but I didn't realize how tall they'd be. Make sure you put them towards the back of your garden. I will be moving them next year.

Comments about American Meadows Peacock Orchid or Gladiolus acidanthera:

I planted these flowers in a simple corner garden. They flourished and the flowers looked like white origami birds floating on the summer air. I can't say a bad word about them, Easy to grow and care for - they take very little work, just water, throw some fertilizer on the ground once and awhile and enjoy the show. Bees love them, and I have spotted a hummer or two showing interest in what these flowers offered.

If you are a Gardner at heart you will love these flowers.

                        Q & A

                        Plant With These:

                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
