USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Reverse of each packet includes the heading “Easy-to-Grow Vegetables” and the following copy: “This packet contains Romaine Lettuce seeds. These seed will produce large, tasty heads of Romaine Lettuce in 65-75 days after planting. For further helpful planting tips, or to learn more about all the other great gardening products we offer, visit AmericanMeadows.com”

Below this is a planting chart with the following planting instructions: “When and where to plant: Lettuce is a cool-weather crop; plant in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Select a sunny location, loosen soil, and mix in some compost and rake smooth. Plant seeds at recommended depth, firm soil over seeds and keep seedbed moist. Repeat at 2 week intervals during cool weather spring and fall. For earliest crop, start seeds indoors.”
