USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Each 2.1” Earth-shaped piece of plantable seed paper contains annual and perennial wildflower seeds like: Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii), Siberian Wallflower (Cheiranthus allionii or Erysimum hieraciifolium), Scarlet Flax (Linum grandiflorum rubrum) and Zinnia (Z. elegans.). Earth shapes are light blue and have green letterpress printing. All-natural colors are provided from biodegradable, water-based inks. To plant your seed paper Earths, just immerse them in water overnight and tear into smaller pieces before planting. Cover pieces lightly with soil or potting soil in an area that gets 6 - 8 hours of sunlight each day. Keep well-watered until seeds sprout and begin to grow, and then keep plantings moist until plants are 4-6” high. Continue to water occasionally if you don’t receive rainfall.
