One of the earliest blooms in a prairie or meadow, few plants are as charismatic as Prairie Smoke. Nodding, dark pink blooms are held on reddish-purple stems and pollinated by bumblebees. Blooms turn upward as the wispy, feathery seed tails emerge. Lacy blue-green foliage turns deep red in fall and often remains throughout winter. This low-growing, low-maintenance prairie native is pest-free and deer-resistant, perfect for massing in rock gardens, meadows, or as a groundcover. (Geum triflorum)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Few plants are as charismatic as Prairie Smoke, with its long-lasting blooms and plumes having given rise to a plethora of common names, including Old Man's Whiskers, Lion's Beard, and Torch Flower, to name a few. Prairie Smoke is a native wildflower found in prairies, mountain meadows, and dry open woodlands throughout the northern reaches of the United States, from New York west through northern Illinois, the Dakotas, and sporadically through the West, as well as southern Canada. Plants naturalize readily in dry, well-draining soils in full sun. Prairie Smoke performs best in cool, dry locations in hardiness zones 3-7. Plants tolerate some shade, especially in hotter areas, and can tolerate moderate moisture only if they have good drainage; plants can die out under wet winter conditions.
