Plant our Giant Swallowtail Nectar Collection to attract giant swallowtail butterflies – and other pollinators – to your garden. This easy-to-grow collection provides a source of nectar-rich blooms and host plants for this butterfly species. Zinnia, Sunflowers, Swamp Milkweed, Rue and Showy Goldenrod provide blooms year after year. These varieties will thrive in almost any sunny spot in the garden or meadow.
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
This easy-to-grow collection features two annuals (Zinnia and Sunflower) and three perennials (Swamp Milkweed, Rue, and Showy Goldenrod) that offer up a source of food and habitat for giant swallowtail butterflies.
Perennial Rue blooms in late spring to early summer and acts a host plant for giant swallowtails. Swamp Milkweed offers up nectar-rich blooms in the spring, followed by Zinnia and Sunflower in the summer, and Showy Goldenrod offers a source of nectar all the way into the fall. This collection can be planted in the spring and fall, blooming in the first season and for years after, providing a long-lasting habitat for giant swallowtail butterflies.
