‘Gerald Darby’ Iris pairs stunning foliage and vivid blooms for unmatched color in the garden. A painterly purple tint adds a striking contrast to emerging foliage, fading away to green in summer. Showy blue-violet flowers are held on dark purple stems, blooming early to mid-spring. This native hybrid Iris thrives in wet soil, so plant it in a water garden, bog garden, or let it naturalize along the edge of a stream or pond. (Iris x robusta)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
‘Gerald Darby’ Iris begins its spring performance with a flush of sword-shaped foliage and vibrant ultraviolet blooms. ‘Gerald Darby’ is a hybrid produced by crossing two marginal aquatic iris species native to eastern North America, Iris versicolor and Iris virginica. Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade. Plants need constantly moist soils and can be planted in up to 4 inches of standing water. Blooms open early to mid-spring and make long-lasting cut flowers. Plants can be trimmed back during the dormant season. Irises spread slowly by rhizomes to form dense clumps, and can be divided in early autumn. Wear gloves when handling rhizomes. Plants are deer and rabbit resistant, and toxic if consumed.
