With its fountain-like shape, Japanese Forest Grass ‘Aureola’ makes a compact, yet graceful addition to moist, shade and part-shade areas. Narrow, bright-yellow blades are beautifully streaked with green stripes and appear the most variegated when planted in shade; full-sun sites inspire its leaves to grow in a solid golden color. Excellent under trees and placed along shady walkways. (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
This plant, when introduced into the US in the mid-nineties, created a sensation. For example, the University. of Arkansas published a paper on it saying, that it had created much excitement amongst gardeners, especially..since it is... uniquely beautiful, long-lived and well behaved. Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra Aureola) is just such a plant.

This beauty grows naturally on mountainside cliffs on Japans main island, and in American gardens, reaches only 12 or 18 inches. It spreads very slowly, by underground roots, as clumps enlarge.
