Lady's Mantle is a classic beauty long cherished for velvety, scallop-edged foliage and chartreuse blooms. Growing in soft mounds, the light green to olive foliage is ignored by deer and rabbits. Sprays of loosely clustered flowers create an airy halo above the plants in late spring and early summer. Lady's Mantle makes a lush groundcover and easy complement many other perennials. With a luxuriously soft, touchable texture, tuck these plants into a cottage gardens or grow at the edge of a path. (Alchemilla mollis)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
Lady's Mantle is quite versatile in the garden. Plants tolerate full sun to full shade, making them useful beneath trees and in transitional areas of the garden. They are not particular about soil type or pH, but do not tolerate dry soils. Ideal conditions include moist, well-draining soils in morning sun. Pair with Geraniums, Peonies, Hostas, Catmint, and Ferns. Provide afternoon shade in hot climates. Lady's Mantle originated in the temperate, mountainous Eastern Carpathians and the Caucasus, and plants are best suited for zones 3-8. Plants spread gradually by rhizomatous roots, and also reseed profusely under ideal growing conditions. Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) are considered invasive in Oregon and Alaska. Seed production can be easily managed by trimming spent flowers after bloom. Lady's Mantle flowers are commonly used in dried arrangements; to dry flowers, cut at the peak of bloom and hang to dry in a dark room.
