Plant Information

The Lamiums are called by the somewhat alarming name, Dead Nettle, but that means only this amazing little plant is related to stinging nettle (a rough weed) and doesn't sting...so being a dead nettle is a good thing.

The strange name aside, these short plants (6-10 high), when well grown, can add glistening sheets of color to shady areas were color may be missing. Plant them with Hostas, Bleeding Hearts, and other shade-lovers. They cover the ground so completely they smother out any invading weeds.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Dragon Lamium:

I love the contrast of the white and green leaves against the purple flowers and other plants. So far, the plants seem to be thriving. I'll still have to see how well they survive the Indiana winter.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Dragon Lamium:

I used it in a small shady area. It arrived in good condition and did well after planted. It was fine until about mid summer when it began to die back from the outer lengths to the rooted portion. Might have been something that I did. I deliberately placed rocks around it to prevent it from taking over the area where it was planted. I would plant it again in a garden where there was room for it to spread unhindered, but not in my current garden.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Dragon Lamium:

I put these in the garden and basically did nothing but water them. I was hoping for a flowering plant that loves the shade and that the critters hate. They took off beautifully, filling in the bare spots that I've been trying to fill for years. Sure hope they make it thru the winter!

Comments about American Meadows Purple Dragon Lamium:

These came healthy and produced lots of flowers, growing vigorously. Unfortunately, some local insect attacked them and they got a fleabitten appearence after a few months. Before becoming 'lunch' they were gorgeous.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
