Plant Information

Grown as much for their attractive leaves as their flowers, lungworts look best grown in masses as a shady ground cover or combined with hostas, hellebores and ferns in a shady garden. The foliage remains attractive all season as long as the soil isn't allowed to dry out. You can rejuvenate a ragged patch by cutting the stems back by half after flowers fade. The genus name Pulmonaria and common name lungwort refer to the spotted foliage, considered to resemble a diseased lung. (It was once believed that if a plant resembled a particular body part, it had the ability to cure ailments associated with it; pulmonaria was used to treat respiratory problems.)

Comments about American Meadows Lungwort Redstart:

So this is me again from the previous review. Though my "lungwort" sprouted right away, the leaves grew in solid green. It's in a nice shady, woodland spot, so it's not a light issue. I have written to American Meadows TWICE in the last 10 days (and sent photos of 5-6 large GREEN leaves) and they have ignored my messages. If you're reading this, AM, please just respond to my e-mails and do not tell me to call. Like most people, I work and have a family and the last thing I feel like doing is wasting my time sitting on hold. I also prefer the digital trail of e-mail over the "I called and spoke to so-and-so" that almost inevitably follows phone calls that aren't acted on.

Comments about American Meadows Lungwort Redstart:

It's early days, but I've had pretty bad luck with bare root plants this year (from other sellers). So I'm happy to report that I planted this pulmonaria a few days after receiving it in early April and it had sent up shoots within a week! So far, so good! I don't know if it helps, but when I plant bare root plants (or transplant any plants), I sprinkle the roots with micorriza. We're rehabilitating our woodland yard as the previous owner let English ivy take over -bleh! So the soil is pretty depleted. As we clear areas of ivy, we've been adding leaf mulch (from our own piles- just chopping them up) and then I'll create mini garden beds with peat, compost and garden soil. Sprinkling of micorrizae on the roots of the plants, and off we go!

    Q & A

    Plant With These:

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
