You do need to follow the directions when scattering the seed, especially if doing a large amount. Don't think you know better than they do. I have a lovely bank of flowers that is thick on one end and more weedy on the other because it is difficult to sow the seeds evenly by hand over a large area. But even with that it is a lovely bank that always wins compliments and doesn't take any work except mowing once in the fall. This spring I will landscape a much larger hillside that was prepared last fall with the NE wildflower mix. This time I am including some annuals to bloom the first summer. I can mow it once in the fall which will prevent brush and trees from growing back, preserving my view with the added benefit of having a beautiful hillside of wildflowers all summer. They start blooming in early summer and continue til fall. By cutting back on lawn I am saving fuel, time and cutting pollution all summer.

Overall this mix has some absoluitely BEAUTIFUL flowers. Unfortunately, they either get washed out in the overabundance of baby's breath in the spring, which the bee's LOVED or buried by the growth of the taller flower's throughout the summer. Most dissapointing was the Wild Cosmos; first of all, American Meadows needs to correct their height in this mix, they ended well over the 47" stated here and much closer to the 72" listed in the Landscaper's Big Blooms mix. This posed two problems, they dwarfed and obscured many of the shorter flowers throughtout the summer, as they are a very "bushy" plant with lots of fine leaves and then just looked unkempt come late summer at 5-6 feet tall. I'll either be shopping for a mix with a more uniform flower height or building my own. I was looking for a natural meadow look and I probably only got it for a week or two after the baby's breath ran it's course and before the taller flowers grew past 36".

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

Since the some of the seeds are so small I guess I couldn't see them. I add packet to sand as directed but still sewed ~ 2X what I should have. However most came up and did very well. I just did a small area this year as a trial. I plan to do the whole area next spring.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

We bought our first home and had an area of our side yard that was wide open, full sun, boring grass. I thought it would be a perfect place for a wildflower meadow and found American Meadows. Threw down this mix in late winter/early spring after doing my best to smother the grass with cardboard the end of summer/autumn before. When I noticed sprouts coming up I made sure the area didn't get too dry until they got larger. Deer, rabbits, and groundhogs frequent our property (not to mention the squirrels, chipmunks, and birds I was worried about when I first put the seed down), and there was definitely some munching going on when the meadow was young--so much so that I worried the whole project was going to be a flop. But we waited to see how things would turn out and by June there was just an explosion of color, and that has continued all season and even now, in mid-October, we've got 5 foot tall cosmos being visited by migrating monarchs as well as other pollinators. So fun to go out and see the variety of flowers and pollinators that each new day brings. It's hard to put into words the joy this meadow has brought me over the season. It's like therapy; a little piece of paradise in my own yard. I'm a bit sad to have to go through all of winter without being able to visit my beautiful meadow every day, but I'm ordering more seed from American Meadows for next year and plan to do so every year for the rest of my life! Turning a portion of your lawn into a rainbow of wildflowers is something everyone should do!! Thank you American Meadows!!

I had a perfect place to plant the seeds, broke up old mulch and watered.... the results have been just splendid. Cosmos four feet high, zinnias blooming every day, smaller varieties are a daily joy -- perfect for any small area that might otherwise go unplanted. Bees and butterflies visit all day long....

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I purchased the Northeast wildflower seed mix in late spring. I admit it was an impulse buy, since I've never done well with seeds. I love gardening but admit I'm not very talented. Most of what I plant dies, even mature plants! Still, gardening makes me happy & gets me outdoors even when its hot. My kids all inhereted my love as well. I figured we could plant the seeds together & see some results. I ended up planting them in late June or early July.I didn't expect much. I knew it was too late in the season & my results would've been less than optimum. Instead, within wks everything was sprouting. Within a month, blooms! Not one or two...tons! I couldn't believe it. I only used a small portion of what was in the bag & my yard never looked better. Tons of orange, yellow, purple & blue. Even better, the flowers bloomed so high they covered the ugly concrete wall in front of my house. Not only are these seeds hardy, they are foolproof! I did mix the seeds with aquarium sand for better coverage. This was a good tip! I can't wait to see next years flowers when I plant at the appropriate time!

We are in awe with our beautiful wildflower meadow. My husband and I planted about 3/4 of an acre of this mix in the spring. (on a section of land that used to grow corn) We had several rains which were perfect for the seeds. First came the gorgeous baby's breath - honeybees loved this. Then the beautiful pink cosmos, followed by yellow and orange cosmos. Everything is blooming now - poppies, cornflower, there is every color and every shape. Our meadow is teaming with bees and butterflies - which was our goal, besides just the sheer beauty. Sunflowers are just beginning to bloom now (August) along with the blackeyed susans - it's positively beautiful. Am eager to see how the meadow moves into its next phase during autumn and then again next spring.

I purchased this product for my daughter who lives in NJ. Thus I can not directly rate them. She did tell me the seeds germinated well and were growing when deer grazed most of them to the ground. I then sent her deer resistant seeds which she has stated are growing well.

This mix and the deer resistant wildflower mix far exceeded my expectations. It is now July and everything is in full bloom. The neighbors commented on my green thumb and these are some of the easiest flowers I've grown. The only drawback is the heavy rains have caused some plants to fall over but it hasn't detracted from their beauty. I also planted the Dutch white clover in my existing lawn and it looks so much better than last year and really attracts bees! I would highly recommend American meadows seeds!

We designated a large area in our yard as a wildflower/pollinator garden. We live in Maryland, and this mix was perfect! We followed instructions and watered at first, but once the flowers are about 6-8" in height, they are on their own. Our garden flourished and stayed pretty all spring/summer and should keep going into the fall months. I would definitely purchase this again and will probably add the pollinator mix too next time. I have never been disappointed with American Meadows products or customer service!

We have a large plot of land and some areas on a slope that are near impossible to mow. I thought i would buy american meadows northwest mix to cover these areas that way i would only have to mow once per year in late fall. Before i planted the area mentioned i did a test area beside our driveway, and the results have been amazing. I have several photographer friends that are begging to come do photoshoots in our little wildflower field. Im really anxious to see how it looks in the second year. Thanks american meadows they are great!!!!!

Roto-tilled a 20x30 area of lawn and planted the Northeast seed mix in late autumn, along with additional Flanders poppy seed I ordered and mixed in separately. I'm so impressed with the color and beauty and it's only June! I planted this to cut down on our lawn mowing and to please the pollinators.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

In year 1, these got off to a slow start, with a lot of baby's breath and not much else. Then the more colorful blooms showed up and it looked great…for a while. But then a big storm came and all the bachelor's buttons (aka cornflowers), which had grown to a height of over 4 feet, flopped forward, burying the shorter flowers under their stems.

To prevent this from happening with the perennials in year 2, we put up a grid of stakes and string to contain the blooms. But unfortunately, all those cornflowers had reseeded themselves - and because of the way they'd flopped forward, the new plants were well outside the boundaries of our grid. So we had a bunch of really tall flowers in front, concealing everything behind them. And when the next storm came, the flowers flopped over again - this time to the side - and we just ended up with a mess.

By year 3, the cornflowers had completely taken over. They were tall and healthy, but they were all you could see - the few shorter flowers that remained behind them were completely hidden. (Sorry, no picture of this.) So we ended up chopping them all down, and next year we are going to plant a perennial mix with NO BACHELOR'S BUTTONS. If any new ones come up, we'll pull them out. I'm not letting them take over again!

I planted my wildflower mix in November after our first heavy frost, as directed. However because of the unprecedented warm weather in Vermont my seed germinated....I assume that the annuals will not germinate in the spring but hopefully I will have the enjoyment of the perennials. I will probably overseed in the spring with annuals. When planting, I mixed the seed with sand as directed and that worked well. I look forward to the spring and my flowers. Next time I will plant in December!

I used the same mix a couple of years ago and was stunned by the color, mix and continued blooming for five years. I recultivated the plot and tried again but the second time I didn't get the same result. The germination rate seemed less that before. I may try again after seeing what comes up next year.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

Planted this mix on a newly graded dirt roadside next to my driveway. Because the new road material that the town used was only gravel, I augmented the gravel with commercial compost. Broadcast the seed in the late spring. Because this was on a fairly steep bank, I covered the seed very lightly with landscaping straw in order to protect the seed from heavy rains. Well, it all came together very nicely. Lots of flowers by early summer and still blooming beautifily. This spot only gets about 3-4 hours of sun a day.

Got to say, what a beautful bundle. My wildflower garden is located right out front where my farmers porch is, wow the questions I get. They are just do beautful,I planted them in the spring this year in with some perennials I already had in my flower bed. I live were the weeds are so hard to control and this has made so much enjoyable. I also planted them for the honey bees and such for my vegetable garden that to has blossomed very well this year. I am excited to see what next year brings for this year I see mostly annuals. What a treat, great for a country or cottage look/feel.

I was very skeptical about succeeding in my effort to start growing wildflowers in my garden. I am a true novice. After speaking with a very helpful person at American Meadows by phone, I decided to try this mix, I literally just tossed the seeds on the ground. I am surprised and delighted by the number of beautiful wildflowers in my garden-Highly recommend this mix. And I'll be buying more for the coming season.

This is a wonderful blend of flowers. It covers the slope of the sand mound, so that I do not have to push the mower on a hill. It has filled in very nicely.

The first to bloom were the Baby Blue Eyes, then Baby's Breath, then Siberian Wallflower, California Poppy, and Red Poppy. They are just getting started since it is the first week of June but I am looking forward to an increased variety as time goes on. I love how the mix will produce all different flowers from late spring to fall. The flowers appear to be so delicate yet the plants seem so sturdy.

Burned in the spring and then lightly tilled a small portion of field at the beginning of the driveway and planted these seeds. Everything that was state on the packaging came up and looked wonderful. Thanks

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I wasn't able to prepare the area as recommended, or as I would have liked. A neighbor was supposed to till a large area for me, and kept putting me off well into the winter, so I had to take matters into my own hands, using my tractor to "rough up" the heavy, thick grass and then broadcast the seeds. My biggest problem is that I wasn't able to get all the grass broken up, and in some places there are too many seeds sprouting too close together. However, the results are fabulous, with new types of flowers opening every few days, and literaly hundreds of new blooms each day!

                                                        Q & A

                                                        Plant With These:

                                                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
