'Foxtrot' Fountain Grass lives up to its namesake, dancing upon the gentlest of breezes to invigorate the garden. Everything about this plant moves, from the flowing foliage to the arching pink plumes. An early bloomer among grasses, 'Foxtrot' sends four-inch plumes skyward mid-summer through fall. The soft bottlebrush blooms are tinged pink to maroon and glisten in the sun. A long-time industry favorite for exceptional dependability, this is among the largest and strongest of fountain grasses. Fast growing, low maintenance, and will not reseed. (Pennisetum alopecuroides)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

48-72" tall (4-6 feet) x 36-48" wide. 'Foxtrot' Fountain Grass has cascading, narrow green foliage. This plant deserves a spot in the garden where its fantastic form can shine. Plant singly as an accent or in groups for a powerful display. Collect and dry plumes for dried arrangements. A well-behaved perennial grass, 'Foxtrot' does not commonly reseed in the garden. Plant it in full sun in any well-drained soil. Plants perform well in hot locations but require adequate moisture. Allow leaf blades to stand during the winter months to provide seasonal interest and shelter for wildlife. Cut back to six inches above ground level in  early spring before new growth emerges.
