‘Wood's Light Blue’ Aster paints the garden with purple-blue blooms from late summer through fall. The low mounding foliage of this compact native perennial is nearly covered with blossoms, providing an important source of late-season nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies. This deer-resistant and mildew-resistant beauty looks lovely massed along borders and makes an excellent cut flower or container planting. (Symphyotrichum dumosum)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

‘Wood's Light Blue’ Aster provides brilliant color against the golden leaves and grassy plumes of autumn. The compact habit requires no staking and looks fabulous at the front of perennial borders or the edges of rain gardens. The dark green leaves display excellent resistance to mildew and rust, while the daisy-like blooms attract scores of native bees, honeybees, butterflies, skippers, and beetles. Symphyotrichum dumosum is a North American native, found in southeast Ontario, and growing from Maine west to Illinois, and south to Florida and Texas. The natural habitat includes open sandy sites, dry to wet fields, and open woods. Plant in rich, evenly moist soils and full sun. Avoid crowding plants to allow good air circulation for healthy foliage and room for plants to expand. ‘Wood's Light Blue’ Aster benefits from dividing every two to three years in spring. Try pairing with sturdy Sedum blooms and the autumn foliage of Amsonia.
